question on the backup firefox data folder
I had to do a refresh of Firefox to its default settings and have the copy of the old data folder sitting on my desktop. How do I restore it back to the state it was before doing the refresh ? Does this also restore the automatic login for sites where I had checked the "Remember Me" button on my initial login?

You are right.
The Refresh Firefox feature creates an Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop, which contains a backup of your old profile folder and its contents. If you recently refreshed Firefox and still have this folder, you already have a complete profile backup.
You can recover your data from the backup file: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles
Thanks for the reply. Will I be able to visit Facebook or Instagram and get automatically logged in as I was before refreshing ? Do I need to do anything other then copying the files over ?

In theory no but :--
To reinstalled an automated backup it is not you that will copy the files, it is a Firefox process.
So check you file name, which should have a date, bet an ####.html file and be some tens of thousands of KB. i.e. mine is 12###KB or 12MB
If the abovee is the case go to
Settings > Account and syncronisation scroll down to Backup then > Restore your data
make a copy of the file you have in case it or something gets corrupted on route
