Firefox won't auto update

I frequently get a notification that an update failed to install and to install it manually. When checking the update section in the settings I see "Restart Firefox to install update". After restarting, the same section shows "Applying update..." but never finishes. This has been happening for a while and it's becoming very frustrating. Any help is appreciated.

One more thing that may be related: sometimes when launching Firefox, the window will pop up for a split second then close and I have to launch it again. This usually happens on a cold start.

And after the "notification that an update failed to install and to install it manually" you downloaded the full installer to have a full binary reinstall — or just let the partial updates try for long enough on their own to eventually succeed?

Correct. And you used the full installer to upgrade fully already — instead of the in–app updater… and then the situation repeats in a couple weeks again?
