Old ctrl+tab behaviour (with instaswitch without any pop ups with manual enter actions)

I saw bunch of threads which suggest to enable "ctrl+tab cycles through tabs in recently used order". It does what I need, but in previous versions I used to press only ctrl+tab. While I was holding ctrl I could iterate over tabs via tab key. After releasing ctrl selected tab was chosen

It differs with current behavior where you press ctrl+tab and after releasing all keys pop up with tabs is still be viewed and you need manual action with space/enter/mouse click to open selected tab

Is there any way to use only ctrl+tab without any manual actions required like it was back in the days where after releasing the control key selected tab is opened?

Maybe it is working the way I described and something is wrong in my system. But this issue is reproduced on different PCs

firefox --version Mozilla Firefox 142.0.1

Have you tried this?? Open Firefox and go to about:config. Search for: browser.ctrlTab.recentlyUsedOrder Set it to false. false → Old behavior (Ctrl+Tab switches immediately, no popup). true → New behavior (shows preview list, requires extra confirmation).

It was true on my side, but I've changed it to false, restarted firefox and nothing - same behavior

please refer this https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/tab-preferences-and-settings

Sorry, but what exactly should help me?

Ctrl+Tab cycles through tabs in recently used order: Select this setting if you want to use the Ctrl + Tab keyboard shortcut to switch through open tabs in the order you viewed them rather than in the order they appear in the Firefox window.

This doesn't address the issue described in the topic.

If I understand what you are saying:

  • You have the box checked
  • Holding down Ctrl while pressing and releasing Tab launches the overlay showing open windows and selects the one that was previously active
  • You can select a different tab by pressing Tab again
  • BUT when releasing Ctrl, Firefox doesn't switch to the selected tab immediately as expected, you need to interact further with the overlay

I can't replicate the problem on Windows.

How long have you had this problem? According to the info provided by your browser, you are running Firefox 142. I found three bug fixes for Firefox 143 related to the overlay, but they are related to the images and mouse movement, not keyboard shortcuts, so they might not be relevant/helpful.
