I appear to have something blocking my download of messages to my inbox; only the same piece of spam gets downloaded. The real mail does not.
Is there some malware I need to remove from my Thunderbird? And if I have to delete my account, can I first save my messages and folders in it?

Go to your providers webmail site and delete the problem message. Then see if your mail downloads. No one can diagnose your computer for malware remotely.

Dear Truman,
Spot on! I used the simple search function with the message's purported sender's name and a couple of messages that were alike showed. I missed them earlier because they were from some time back, about a year or more ago. After they were deleted, everything works (downloads to Thunderbird normally) again!
Thank you sir, elook01
