I see lots of tips for deleting obsolete TO: addresses from the autocompletion dropdowns when you create a new e-mail, but nothing about fixing bad entries in the FROM: dropdown. How do I manage it? My father somehow got his SMTP settings set to default on one of his accounts when it shouldn't have been, and now there are two nearly identical-appearing entries: one that uses the correct SMTP server and one that uses the incorrect one. Needless to say, this is frustrating for my father if he happens to pick the wrong one, and he can't send any e-mails.

Right click the account on the left in the folder Pane and select Settings. Scroll to the bottom of the account listing to Outgoing Server(SMTP) Edit the problem server setting. Then click on the account on the account settings page and towards the bottom of that page is another place labeled Outgoing Server(SMTP) This is where you assign smtp servers that you created in the first location to an account. Assign the correct server to the correct account.

Yeah, I already fixed the root cause of his difficulty sending e-mail, and the SMTP server is corrected in both of those two places already. But the bad one still appears in the dropdown when I (or he) goes to compose a new e-mail. The bad one is a ghost - it represents a configuration that no longer exists. I'd like to get rid of it.

Thanks,

Rebeccah

If the unwanted From address is an account, remove it from Tools/Account Settings, select it in the left pane, then click Account Actions at the bottom left, Remove Account. If it's the default account, it can't be removed, so select another account and set it as default in Account Actions.

If the unwanted address is an identity, it can be deleted in Tools/Account Settings, select the account in the left pane, then Manage Identities in the lower right pane.
