How to get GnuPG modern on PATH?

I am trying to get the ability to send encrypted E-mail with PDF attachments. I think that I have installed Enigmail. But when I attempt to use it I get a message under force encryption:

Enigmail: Unable to locate GnuPG executable in the PATH. Make sure you have set the GnuPG executable path correctly in the Enigmail Preferences.

To permanently avoid this alert, either fix the problem or uninstall Enigmail. Click on the Help button for more details.

What is the right PATH? Can I move the file there?

IIRC, the set-up settings for Enigmail will help locate the gnupg executable for you.

Have you installed gpg4win or similar yet?

I am very much of a novice in this. I did install the gpg4win as you recommended. I now have it on my start menu. I do not know what to do with it.

Maybe next I should find IIRC to locate the gnupg. Windows explorer found it in my downloads folder. Can I just move it to where it should go?

I have not put in any keys yet. Should I just make something up? How many characters?

What is the next step?

Thanks Zenos.

You need to install gpg4win. Let it use the defaults.

Enigmail needs to know where it is. In Thunderbird, in Tools|Add-ons|Extensions, select Enigmail, select Preferences and under Basic it needs to be told where gpg is. If you've accepted the defaults when installing gpg, Enigmail will know where to start looking.

Enigmail/gpg will create keys for you. I find it's easier to nominate one primary account, create the keys and then attach other accounts to it, rather than creating a separate key for each and every account or identity. This makes it much easier when certs expire and need to be renewed/replaced.

I found it hard to locate correspondents who also want to encrypt. And you'd think that signing messages to provide some confirmation that they're genuine would be welcomed by banks etc, but 9 times out of 10, a signed message will be rejected because idiot anti-virus software thinks the signature is binary code and therefore must be a virus or worm.

(I note that if I want to see old insecure software in action I need go no further than just about any UK high street bank or building society - like a credit union, perhaps - where most of their systems seem to still use XP.)

I do have Enigmail installed here. If you want someone to test yours against, PM me here and I'll send you my email address.

Zenos,

I have attached some screen shots so that you know where I am in the process and hopefully can get some direction as to where to go with it.

The first I think shows that I have Enigmail in my system. You instructed me:

Enigmail needs to know where it is. In Thunderbird, in Tools|Add-ons|Extensions, select Enigmail, select Preferences and under Basic it needs to be told where gpg is. If you've accepted the defaults when installing gpg, Enigmail will know where to start looking.

This is the best I can do with this. I could not find preferences or see if gpg has accepted defaults. Should I reinstall gpg?

The second screen shot shows what I get when I select Thunderbird from the startup. I do not know what password to put in there of if there is a way to make a new one.

The third screen shot shows what I get when I select Kleopotra from the start up. I got this from installing gpg4win. I do not know what if anything I am supposed to do here.

What is my next step?

Thanks.

Screenshot 1 is fine. Gpg is installed and Enigmail says it has found it.

Screenshot 2: Kleopatra is bundled in with gpg, but I don't recall ever finding a use for it. Enigmail has its own key storage and management facilities. Enigmail is a bolt-on front end that neatly integrates use of gpg; with another email client that doesn't have the Enigmail bit, you might need Kleopatra.

I suggest you make your Thunderbird menu visible if it isn't already, and use Enigmail|Setup Wizard to get started with Enigmail.

No menu? Hold down the <alt> button, tap V, Select Toolbars and tick the checkbox for Menu Bar. (I'd also activate Mail Toolbar while there.)

Hi Zenos,

I was able to resolve the password problem by going on gmail. I got a message that they had blocked a sign in attempt. I was given the option to make it less secure. I chose that and no longer have that problem.

For the last screen shot, I had installed Kleopatra because of your prior instructions in a prior post "Have you installed gpg4win or similar yet?

http://www.gpg4win.org/"

Lastly, I was able to find where I could use the setup wizzard for Enigmail. I chose to have it encrypt everything since that is what I got that site for. I was able to send an E-mail to another E-mail address. I do not know how to open it. I have the file attachments " Attachment (1KB); encrypted.asc (32KB) " What do I tell the recipients to do so that they can read the E-mail?

Thanks Zenos.

I am sending you a PM as well.

more options

They need to install gpg too. I did mention that the challenge will be to find correspondents who a) want to encrypt and b) have gpg.

In most cases, the best you will be able to do is to sign (not encrypt) your messages, and even then there's a risk your signature will fall foul of anti-virus programs.

Have you enabled Enigmail on the account you've sent to?

more options

No. I cannot I think because it is Juno.

For the recipient who wants only to receive my encrypted E-mail and not send any, is there an easy way they can set up for it?

more options

To send an encrypted message using gpg, the recipient must have gpg installed and must offer you his public key. You use this to encrypt the message and his gpg uses his private key to decrypt it.

Of course, for Thunderbird users, we infer Enigmail when talking about gpg.
