I need help getting upgraded to a newer firefox version - details to follow.

I am on an iMac, running 10.5.8 (yes I know I need to upgrade).

I am still running firefox 3.6 because I have been having problems upgrading.

I have on several different occasions tried to upgrade, each time new one acts like it will be fine, but - some of the times my bookmarks don't come over (I would very much like them to), and all of the time the new version eventually disappears from my desktop, leaving only the 3.6 version accessible.

I have not yet tried to uninstall 3.6 first, as I said, I am hoping to save my bookmarks.
