Firefox used to automatically open pdf's when I downloaded them, but now it doesn't. Can I reset it to open pdf's automatically?
Not sure what to add except that it's more convenient for pdf's to open automatically when I download them, but I don't know how to make that happen.

Every time Firefox opened
== I think it started when I switched my downloads to a different folder (on my desktop), but it didn't get fixed when I switched back to the download folder.

You can control how Firefox handles each type of file by going into Firefox > Preferences > Applications. If you want Firefox to open PDFs inside its own window, you need to have a reader plugin. Make sure you have it installed by checking the add-ons manager, under the tab "Plugins". If you don't have it, I recommend you use Foxit Reader, since it's free, very light and very fast: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/
Eureka! I went to the Applications panel, as you suggested, and selected Adobe Reader as my default and it worked! Thanks so much for your help.
One last question: is Foxit Reader preferable to the free version of Adobe, and if so, why?

In my personal opinion as an IT enthusiast, pretty much anything is preferable to Adobe PDF reader. Foxit Reader has many advantages, such as being lighter (more that one 10th the side of Adobe Reader), faster (it's a considerable improvement when you compare it with Adobe Reader) and having a browser plugin (like Adobe Reader, which some PDF readers don't have), which is very handy. Since it's free (it has a small ad banner in the main reader's toolbar, which you can disable), you can try it at any time and make up your mind. And unlike Adobe Reader, once you uninstall it, it's gone for good, if you decide you don't like it.
Foxit Reader is for Windows only.
