why is adaptive spam NOT working
Despite my marking messages several times as NOT spam, Thunderbird keeps on and on RE-marking them as spam. And the mails are coming from one of my own addresses, and they ARE in my address book!!!!!
There seems no way that I can stop the beast from misbehaving.

I am sorry you are having this kind of issue with your email.
Try resetting the data if your computer is having trouble with that
Try to open your Thunderbird settings. Go to Privacy & Security, scroll down to the Junk settings, and click the Reset Training Data button.

Also, keep in mind that you have to train the Adaptive Junk Filter on what is both Junk AND Non-Junk for it to be effective. Here's an article that described how it works and how to get the most out of it:

It can never be 100% effective, but it gets more reliable the more you train it.
