Running Thunderbird 16.0.2 on Mac running OS 10.5.8 This has worked perfectly for 6 years. Today I suddenly can't log in the the Westnet (Western Australia) mail server. Automated or manual sending of my password gets the response "Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server mail.westnet.com.au responded: Invalid base64 data in continued response"

I still have web access and can access my mail either via the Westnet web portal or using the Mail Mac client. Using Thunderbird however I can't log in.

That sounds like the server thinks your already logged in. Try turning the machine off for 10-15 minutes and have a cuppa. That should be long enough to force a timeout if there is something hung up at the westnet end and try it again.

Thanks Matt After persisting for about 24 hours, this problem has disappeared. I did in fact walk away and do something else for a few hours although the computer was left asleep not off. A day later all remains OK so I'm really no wiser as to just what or where the problem was. Regardless much thanks for your assistance.
