It's almost impossible to send a message to many recipients (using a mail list). I tried it with the same version from Win7 with NOD32 and Win8 with Avast.

I use thunderbird from 1.1.2014 and totally I have around 2000 emails, many of them with files attached in my disk. It's business address so I need them. I have it installed in two different laptops, one runs Win7 and uses NOD32 the other is new and runs Win8 with Avast free version for protection.

At the beginning everything worked perfectly. The last few months I experience low speed, thunderbird frozes for a few seconds etc on the second laptop with AVAST. It's also not possible to send a message to a mailing list with 48 recipients. When I try to do it, I also check the internet connection and I see that despite the fact that I click "Send" and thunderbird is "sending messages" there is no traffic (or very low traffic) on "Sent Data". Thus, nothing is being sent! I can let thunderbird working this "sending messages" for hours without anything happening. I was sure that this is a problem of Win8 but when I tried to send the same message to the same list from the other laptop (Win7 and NOD32) the same issue occured. It's important to know that Thunderbird is not running slow or freezes in Win7 with NOD32.

In the end, I use gmail to send the messages... When I tried gmail from both laptops, the message could be sent.

So, we have 2 possible problems: 1. Why Thunderbirds is running slow in Win8 with Avast, and how can we fix this? 2. Why is it not possible to send the message to the mailing list? I created the mailing list 2 times from the beginning and checked every email address carefully for spelling mistakes.

Thank you in advance for your time!

All names must be valid addresses. A non valid or absent address will put an extra comma in the line. Check outbox and see if it stalled Gmail has a limit of how many to send in a given time. Who is the other provider? Slow, have you compacted your boxes?

I seperated the list into 3 smaller. Each one has now 26 addresses, all are valid and properly writen. It takes around 1-2 mins after clicking "send" before it starts really sending the message. When it starts sending the message it takes minimum time depending on the size. When I used the bigger list it could take hours without proceding to send.

What do you mean "other provider"? The email accounts are hosted in ipage, is this what you mean? Could it be their problem?

First: When you refer to 'Mailing list': Is this a Mailing List, a sub group in one Thunderbirds address books? All contacts in a Mailing list are in the associated address book. Any contact put into a Mailing List must have a valid email address. You do not need to type them all out as they are in the address book.

See info all about Mailing List:

Re: Avast scanning out going mail Stop scanning out going mail, this program will slowdown the process.

The are limits on the amount you can send, Suggest you read the info they supply:

WoW! I'm surprised by the speed you reply and how serious you are with your answers! Thank you very much guys!!!

Replying to Toad-Hall: I have a proper mailing list created as the manual says. It's a small group of contacts that exist in the address book. I do not type them as CC I just write "clients" and before I finish the word the name of the list appears.

How can I stop Avast from scanning out going mail? It's the free version and I haven't found a real solution. I also tried to totally turn off the "mail shield" but I kept facing the same issues. However, I just turned it off and tried to send the mail, I didn't restart windows or thunderbird

The idea with ipage server was fantastic! It would never come to my mind!!! As far as I see, the limit is 250 mails per hour. I doubt if I have ever reached the 50% of it. I also don't reach the bandwith limits... Besides that, if I had exceeded the limit I would get multi responses that "mail was not delivered".

I want to thank you both for your excellent help so far. I'm sad to say that I still haven't solved the issue. When I made smaller lists, with the same addresses chosen from the address book I could send the messages, having a short delay. I would blame Avast but I tried the same on another laptop with my favourite NOD32 and had the same problem.

What else should I check? Should I focus on Avast?

Sounds like nothing amiss with the creating Mailing list. Obviously you are not exceeding the hourly quota.
