hello, i had a friend and his father needed urgently to migrate his thunderbird with 1 email to a new computer but he wasnt able to setup the emailaccount in a new german client. i helped and the problem was that the setup asks for the password but it meant the password from the emailprovider to allow thirdpartyapps access. please consider to improve the german setup wizard by adding a new textline to clearify. best regards

S pozdravom

You would already have an existing email address with an email provider. It might be an email address provided by your internet service provider or a free one provided by eg: gmail.

You would be able to logon to that email address webmail account via a browser to directly access the account. You would have to provide your email address and password in order to access the webmail account. This is the only place where you can modify any password. The password would never be 'provided by the email provider' because that's totally insecure. The password would be created by the person who owns the account - the person who has the email address assigned to them. They create and modify their own password.

All email client programs are third party apps. Thunderbird is an email client program you install on your computer.

When you are creating a mail account in Thunderbird, it means you set up server settings to access the server to download emails into the mail account for a particular email address.

It requires the email address and password for the account to be set up. That password is the one created by the account holder of the email address and it is the sae password they would use to access their webmail account to view emails directly on email providers website.

That email address and password is sent to the server that currently stores all your emails to verify you want Thunderbird to access your account and to allow download of emails.

If you are setting up an account which uses Authentication Method : Oauth2 (gmail. outlook and yahoo servers use it), then you may get a prompt from Gmail or Yahoo or Office365 to confirm you really are you and to set up to allow Thunderbird access. That means you are being asked for email and password again.

There is no special different password just to allow third party access. There is only one password. It is the password the server accepts for access to that email address.

However, If the user has set up additional 2FA (2 Factor Authentication) also known as 2 step verification, then they may get a prompt on their mobile for the key also known as passkey, but that is not Thunderbird.
