Firefox since Fx 79.0 and later including the current Fx 99 and Fx 91 ESR requires macOS 10.12 (ten.twelve) at minimum.
Besides updating your macOS to macOS 10.12 (ten.twelve) or later, the most current Firefox version you can install on mac OS 10.11.6 is Fx 78.15.0 ESR though it is EOL with no more updates.

James, Thank you for your response. I downloaded File Firefox 78.15.0esr.pkg75M04-Oct-2021 10:51 and now get the message "You can’t use this version of the application “Firefox” with this version of OS X.You have OS X 10.11.6. The application requires OS X 10.12 or later." It was downloaded to my hard drive. How do I get rid of it now?
