Sometimes Control+Left Click doesn't open a new tab in the background, rather then foreground.

Is there any way of making sure it works consistently? I need to right click then click "Open Link in New Tab" to have it work reliably. Maybe something in about:config? Using latest Win7 64 bit Firefox. I've noticed this for probably 2 years now at least. Not sure if it ever worked 100%.

Some of the links will have destinations within the same webpage. These kinds of links will not open in new tab. For others, it should probably work.

I have idea what you mean by "destinations within the same webpage". I see links. Some open in the background using Control+Left click and some open in the foreground. They should all open in the background. Obviously some bonehead web designer is trying to circumvent convention for some bizarre reason known only to themselves. If I right click the link and select "Open link in new tab" it works 100% of the time. So I guess the challenge is how to get Control+Left click to replicate "Open link in new tab" all the time. Maybe there's something in About:Config that could do that?

Probably they are scripted popup links being triggered by the click. There is a separate preference for those:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

More info on about:config: Configuration Editor for Firefox. The moderators would like us to remind you that changes made through this back door aren't fully supported and aren't guaranteed to continue working in the future. Since we have had this setting for a long time, I feel comfortable mentioning it.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste inback and pause while the list is filtered

Firefox should list several preferences related to various things that open in a new tab.

The relevant preference is the one for "diverted" links, i.e., diverted from opening in a new pop-up window to opening a new tab instead:

(3) Double-click the browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground preference to switch the value from false to true

Thank you jscher2000. I set it so now we'll see how well it works. Is about:config wonderful or what? You write like a lawyer, rather comprehensively, covering any and all bases. Are you a lawyer? Or just very cautious?  :)

I am lawyer; there's a disclosure in my profile.

Another issue that probably isn't solvable is the tendency of pages not to move the focus from a selection box that controls what is displayed like "Results" to the page itself. So you set it from 20 to All and the page reloads. Then you hit PageDown to read that page. What happens? PageDown changes the "Results" box to something else and it loads again with the wrong setting. Maybe this is a web designer that's not thinking. But I don't think even 1 in a thousand people would really want the focus to be on that selection box after its loaded the page with the preferred setting. I think what is needed is for the page to always be the focus when reloading and never a box on that page. The only way the focus should be on the box is if its clicked with the left mouse button. As soon as it reloads the focus is back on the page. Any ideas?

Maybe we'll cover that in your other thread? https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1366125

Unfortunately this option causes many links that are left clicked to also open in the background. But not all. There's no consistency. So I had to reset it. If you have any other ideas let me know please.

I thought you wanted ALL links that open in tabs to open in the background, and there was only a problem with certain links not covered by the built-in checkbox on the Settings page ("When you open a link, image or media in a new tab, switch to it immediately" unchecked).

What exactly do you want to happen with regular clicks, right-click > New Tab, and Ctrl+click?

more options

Well I want things to be predictable naturally. Left click should open a link directly, closing/leaving that tab and going to the next one. Control+left click should open in the background, staying where I am. This was particularly useful when we had slower internet speeds as it allowed pages to load in the background while we continue to view the current page. Then when we finally went to the next page its had plenty of time to load. Even today there are many pages which take a few seconds to load on my 15mb connection, probably because when I have other things running as well. Its just a great way of being better organized when juggling multiple tabs.

Okay, let's break that down a little further:

(1) Links that the site does not "target" to a new window

[1a] default behavior with single left click: open in same tab [1b] default behavior with Ctrl+click: open in a new tab in the background

(2) Links where the site set the "target" to a new window

[2a] default behavior with single left click: Firefox diverts the new window to a new tab instead, and switches focus to the new tab [2b] default behavior with Ctrl+click: open in a new tab in the background

(3) Links where a script intercepts the click and launches it in a new window with no special features set

[3a] default behavior with single left click: Firefox diverts the new window to a new tab instead, and switches focus to the new tab [3b] default behavior with Ctrl+click: Firefox diverts the new window to a new tab instead, and switches focus to the new tab

(4) Links where a script intercepts the click and launches it in a new window with special features set, such as width and height

[4a] default behavior with single left click: Firefox allows the new window [4b] default behavior with Ctrl+click: Firefox allows the new window

Note 1: Changing browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground should change the behavior for [2a], [3a], and [3b].

Note 2: If browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction is set to 0, then [4a] behaves like [3a] and [4b] behaves like [3b].
