I currently use gmail via my Gsuite account. I'm considering installing Thunderbird as a backup and to use when I'm traveling and need to be offline. If I like it I may use it as my primary email client.

I currently get my gmail via POP but some instructions say to change it to IMAP. Is that necessary and what are any downsides to doing so?
