I've looked into migrating to Thunderbird in the past but there's always been one major speedbump. It has been several years since I looked so I am hoping this has been resolved.

I use mail on multiple machines with the mail itself being in a directory on my server. Each machine has an email client installed but all machines point to the same exported directory. This directory of course holds all the mail, settings, customizations and so on and the indvidual machines have only the default mail client. This allows for easy backups and complete portability (for instance, can transfer the mail to a USB stick for use on laptop when server is not available). This also allows multiple users on a given machine as each simply points to their own share. And it allows multiple independent mail configs and the mail directory can be mounted anywhere with no changes.

To use all I need currently is a command line <client> <share> and that's it.

In the past thunderbird profiles looked promising but required changes based on where/how they were mounted on a given machine so didn't really do what is needed (no longer portable).

QUESTION: Can I do what I want with today's (Jul 2018) Thunderbird?

After reviewing various postings and documents, I would like to withdraw this query, as it appears that what I need to do can apparently be done using profiles and command line options.

Next step of course is to jump in and test.
