Following a link causes a completely unrelated site--always advertising-- to open at the same time in another window. How to prevent this?

Frequently, when navigating to a familiar website, a second window opens underneath the desired one. The second, not-requested site, is invariably some kind of garbage advertising site, often with animations or video playing. The content in the undesired window often causes the whole browser to hang, forcing me to quit and restart it. Upon navigating back to the desired site, the problem does not recur. Typically I see this on several sites in a day, but only once on each one, until I go to one again the next day. An example of a website where I have seen this behavior is http://www.powerlineblog.com/?layout=blog. I do not believe that this serious, well-managed site is responsible for this annoying behavior, but rather that the browser is being hijacked somehow.

Is there some strategy to overcome this problem?

You may have ad/mal-ware. Further information can be found in this article; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware?cache=no

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web Link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for a good ad / pop-up blocker.
