The latest version of Thunderbird (91.1.2 (64-bit)) installed yesterday. Before the installation I was able to send emails on all my accounts. After the installation I cannot send emails on any of the accounts.

When I reply to an email, the send button is greyed out. When I make a new email and click on send nothing happens. I can still receive emails. There are no messages that I am doing anything wrong.

I have four separate accounts, each with their own SMTP server. Send doesn't work on any of them. My OS is Windows 10 and is up to date. My antivirus is McAfee LiveSafe (16.0) and it is up to date.

Those error are all about files being locked as read only. There are some reasons possible for this, but lets tackle the most obvious first and try and mark them as not read only.

Go to help menu > more troubleshooting information. Click on the open folder button in the profile folder entry in Troubleshooting information. Note the folder name you are in in the status bar of the file explorer. Close Thunderbird. Press the up arrow in windows file explorer so the folder name is profiles. Right click the profile folder you were just in and select properties. Down the bottom of the properties you will set attributes and read only probably with a square in the box. Click it to clear it and select ok, then try Thunderbird again.

Read-only had a square in the box as you said it might. I unset it and hit Apply, and it popped up a new window asking if I wanted to "Apply changes to this folder only" or "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files." The default was set to the latter and I could not select the former. I hit OK, Apply, and OK, and when I immediately selected Properties on it a second time to doublecheck that it "took," the square was back.

My Mother has the same Problem as @tozerdd (also since upgrading to 91.1.2 last friday). But the curious thing is, that when I send her an E-Mail and request a Read-Receipt, she can press the button on "send receipt" and the receipt get sent (I receive it). This means that the SMTP Account is working. But using REPLY, REPLY ALL, FORWARD or WRITE NEW MESSAGE only results in having the SEND Button doing nothing. I tried to uninstall and reinstall Thunderbird on her machine (32bit Version, 64bit Version, EN-US Version, FR-FR Version) to no avail. It is still exactly the same.

On the other hand, I also have 91.1.2 installed and it works like a charm.

Can you make head or tail of this situation ?

jean-marie Did you perform the same process to check what was being displayed in the error console ? Did you see the same error that the abook.sqlite file could not be read? Post that information. If yes: Did you access follow instructions : Menu app icon > Help > More Troubleshooting Information Under Application Basics' section - about 11th in list is 'Profile Folder' - click on 'Open Folder' It will show the contents of the 'profile name' folder.

Exit Thunderbird now this is important.

look for 'abook.sqlite' file Right click on that file and select 'Properties' If it says under Attributes that 'Read only' is selected, then uncheck that option. Click on Apply and OK. Allow changes if asked. If 'Read Only' is already unchecked: Go up the directory to the 'Thunderbird'/'Profiles' folder, so you can see the actual 'profile name' folder. Right click on the profile name folder and select 'Properties' Under Attributes if 'Read only' is selected, then uncheck that option. Click on Apply and OK. Allow changes if asked.

Start Thunderbird

Note: if the 'read-only status returns then check the Security tab and see you as a User has full permissions.

I tried to remove possible Read-Only Attributes on Files and Directories starting with the "Profile" Directory. Got all R/O removed, but this didn't help.

Then I looked at the Error Console and got Messages about "corrupt ....sqllite" files as well as abook.nab. So I just did a backup of the "Profile" Directory and then deleted all files in there. Started Thunderbird (like a virgin) and configured it again with incoming/outgoing Servers, point TB to the correct Directory for "Local Folder", as well as all necessary infos in preferences for General, Composition, Privacy&Security, ... and voilà. Thunderbird can now again send mail messages ! It is back working as before the Update to 91.2.1.

This solved the Problem for my mother, and perhaps it could help others also.

Looking into the Error Console was finally a great Help (Didn't know about the Ctrl+Shift+J until now  ;-)

Jean-Marie: so did you lose your old address book? Were you able to restore it or any other files from a backup of the Profiles directory prior to updating to 91.2? I use POP, so if I delete my Profiles directory I lose 20 years of emails and saved addresses.

Further to the previous possible solutions to not being able to send after trying all the usual possibilities including the ones suggested in this thread, the error console hint allowed me to get the error code that allowed me to widen my search. In another forum the address database and pab.na2 file was suggested as a possible issue, the solution I tried was successful. I noted that the original pab.na2 file had an date from 2003 obviously very old & was suggested as a potential source of problems in my case I cut it from the working profile (working with the exception of being able to send that is) Thunderbird was then restarted & lo & behold sending, forwarding & sending a finished draft all worked correctly along with autocomplete of the send email address which was a suprise - the 1st send after the deletion caused a request to re enter the server send password so that is some how related to the process as well. Subsequently I also checked the profile & a pab.na2 file with the current date had been recreated which accounts for the autocomplete functioning - So I hope this helps Regards

Thanks for posting this information. It's really useful to know as it might apply to some people, but it's rather unusual. Thunderbird previously used *.mab files, but since 78* uses *.sqlite files for address books. I'm not aware of Thunderbird having the ability to use .na2 files.

I recall Netscape used to use pab.na2 file for address book but I'm going back a long time. Did you ever perform a migration from Netscape to Thunderbird - it would have been a while ago probably as far back as 2005/6 'ish. If yes, then I suspect there are preferences in your 'prefs.js' file which link the pab.na2 file to the abook.sqlite file. Something like: user_pref( "ldap_2.servers.pab.filename ", "abook.sqlite "); user_pref( "ldap_2.servers.pab4x.filename ", "pab.na2 "); Plus a load of others - I've just mentioned a couple. Do you see something like that in the profile name folder's 'prefs.js' file ? If yes, it would be helpful if you could post an image showing entries for: user_pref( "ldap_2.server............

Then I would have a better understanding of your particular setup. Thanks for assisting.

@sjlane: This worked for me! I closed Thunderbird, deleted pab.na2, and restarted. A new pab.na2 was created. I can now send, and the address book auto-complete works. THANK YOU!!

@Toad-Hall: I did migrate from Netscape to Thunderbird many years ago. my pab.na2 was dated 2005.

prefs.js has pages and pages of lines with user_pref("ldap_2.servers...

There are also many copies of prefs.js (prefs-1.js through prefs-12.js) in the profiles folder.

prefs.js contains the following lines after I deleted pab.na2 and it was re-created:

user_pref("ldap_2.servers.pab.csid", "iso-8859-1"); user_pref("ldap_2.servers.pab.filename", "pab.na2"); user_pref("ldap_2.servers.pab.replication.lastChangeNumber", 0);

I'm not finding any other mentions of .pab.

Here are mentions of abook.sqlite :

user_pref("ldap_2.servers.NewAddressBook.filename", "abook.sqlite") ... user_pref("ldap_2.servers.abook.filename", "abook.na2.sqlite")

Not sure if that helps. Let me know if there are other user_pref("ldap_2.servers.... statements that would be useful to see.

Same story here. When I upgraded TB today from 89(?) to 91.3.2, "send" was grayed out when composing or replying to messages. The log had messages about a database corruption, but only gave code file names, not the DB. It affected all my accounts, so likely global. Eventually I figured out is was the address book; Tried to open the address book and got nothing, but a similar error. Some recent support issues led me to the solution above.

A former Netscape mail user, my pab.na2 was from 2001. Same entries in the prefs.js file. Deleting that file when TB was not running was the solution.

Thanks to all that contributed!

I have tried everything in this thread but to no avail. I DID have the "read-only" attribute on the profiles folder. I cleared it and applied the setting to the sub-folders. But still no changes. Also, my Address Book is blank, but my CardBook is ok.

Troubleshooting mode changes nothing. No Send button available, no address book.

Running TB 91.3.2 (64-bit) in Windows 10-64. Everything up-to-date.

My suspicion is that something in the latest update broke stuff!

If no address book this explains no send button.

check Profile name folder: Do you have abook.sqlite and history.sqlite files with good size ? Do you have any backups you can use?

In 'profile name folder - opne the 'prefs.js' file using Notepad and locate all the entries that start with : user_pref("ldap_2.servers....

Post an image which shows all the ldap entries.

What is shown in the error console? REad this bug report and tell me if this describes your situation. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1743349

so, after speaking with LOTS of folks at https://chat.mozilla.org/#/room/#thunderbird:mozilla.org, I have downgraded from 91.4.0x64 to thunderbird 68.9.0 x64, and I can NOW send and reply to all emails i choose to .. my address book is still empty... im looking for a way to import my google contacts into thunderbird.... simply adding gcontactsync addon seemed to do the job https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/gcontactsync/?src=search

Sounds very frustrating. 'My address book is empty and won't let me create a new contact.' - if address book is not accessible then it would mean the 'send' button may not get enabled. Is that 'Send' button enabled or not when there is an entry in a TO field ?

'I've tried all the options here' does not tell us what is going on in the error console or what you located in the prefs.js file for ldap servers. You may be trying options that are not relevant. Please supply information. control +shift +J What is in error console ? - post an image of the contents of the error console. Access 'prefs.js' file and locate the section showing ldap information and post an image that shows all the ldap entries.

Thanks Toad-Hall. Attached is the error console and prefs.js file

The send button is grey, then I add an address (tried various correctly written addresses) then it looks enabled but nothing happens when the button is pressed, nor ctrl-enter.

The error console seems to be disliking the 'history.sqlite' file and mentioning null data. This would be the 'Collected Addresses' address book.

In Thunderbird Access error console - control +shift +J click on the bin icon to clear all contents Close Error Console.

Menu app icon > Help > More Troubleshooting Information Under 'Applications Basics' - half way down 'Profile Folder' - click on 'Open Folder' A new window opens showing contents of profile name folder

Exit Thunderbird now.

Scroll down to locate 'history.sqlite' file. Do you also see a 'history.v2.sqlite' file ? If yes, Try this first: Rename 'history.sqlite' to say 'history.sqlite.old' Rename 'history.v2.sqlite' to say 'history.sqlite'

Restart Thunderbird.

Test: send

If fail: Check 'Error console' for new contents and post results.

Do you have a backup of the 'profile name' folder ? If yes: empty error console Access profile as before Exit Thunderbird. Rename 'history.sqlite' to say 'history.v2.sqlite' - so it's back to original state. Paste in a copy of 'history.sqlite' from a backup Start Thunderbird and then test a send.

If no backup then let's use the 'stuff' address book to create a new history address book. At this point, you may have lost anything in the original 'history.sqlite' file, but there is an addon which might work to fix - try that later. The purpose is to try and get all address book back into Address Book, so to get the 'Send' button working again.

empty error console Access profile as before Exit Thunderbird. 'history.sqlite.old' - leave as it is - this was the original file that failed. Rename 'history.sqlite' to say 'history.v2.sqlite' - so it's back to original state. Rename 'abook-1.sqlite' to say 'history.sqlite' Restart Thunderbird

In Address Book, you should be seeing all the email addresses you had in 'stuff' now appear in 'Collected Addresses'. If desired - Create a new address book and move all the 'Collected Addresses' contacts into the new address book.

REport back on results.
