Have tried safe mode, fresh install of Firefox. I can login using Chrome and Edge without a problem. I may have tried to change privacy and security settings and I am wondering if that is the problem and what is the fix. Many thanks in advance.

Hi Bloogle, what happens when you try to sign in? Do you get the usual two part sequence (gmail address, then password), and then get redirected to the service where you started? Or instead of getting to your mail you end up back at login?

I may have tried to change privacy and security settings and I am wondering if that is the problem and what is the fix.

Check your cookie settings. This article will point you to the ones that usually cause issues: Websites say cookies are blocked - Unblock them.

Any difference?

Thank you so much. It was driving me nutty. The link in your reply was invaluable, although the list of allowed sites contained https://google.com and https://mail.google.com was not listed anywhere as blocked or allowed. I added it and market allowed, and that did the trick. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you – we were away, but sincere thanks again.

I can't log into gmail using Firefox. It just doesn't load. Chrome works fine.

Hi nancykmiller54, how far do you get? For example, do you get the sign-on page for entering your username and password? Does that submit successfully?

Then it should redirect back to your inbox. Do you get stuck on a blank page, or is there a partial load, or is there an error message?

Does it make any difference to use a direct link:

https://mail.google.com/mail/#inbox

If you are getting a blank page after entering your login, please make sure the redirect block is turned off:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste access and pause while the list is filtered

(3) If the accessibility.blockautorefresh preference is bolded and "modified" to true, double-click it to restore the default value of false

If a site is generally known to work in Firefox, these are standard suggestions to try when it stops working normally:

Double-check content blockers: Firefox's Content Blocking feature and extensions that counter ads and tracking may break websites that embed third party content (meaning, from a secondary server).

(A) Do you see a shield icon toward the left end of the address bar, near the lock icon? More info on managing the Tracking Protection feature in this article: Content Blocking.

(B) Extensions such as Adblock Plus, Blur, Disconnect, Ghostery, NoScript, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin or uMatrix should provide toolbar buttons to manage blocked content in a page. There may or may not be a number on the icon indicating the number of blocked items; you may need to click the button to see what's going on and test whether you need to make an exception for this site.

Cache and Cookies: When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, click the lock icon at the left end of the address bar. After a moment, a "Clear Cookies and Site Data" button should appear at the bottom. Go ahead and click that.

In the dialog that opens, you will see one or more matches to the current address so you can remove the site's cookies individually without affecting other sites.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Testing in Firefox's Safe Mode: In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

Am having this problem too. Can log in to Gmail Inbox via Chrome. Log in "successfully" to Gmail via Firefox. i.e. After having to find the sign-on page each time (?), and entering username and password, it submits successfully but either opens Google Account landing page or blank page. Cannot access the Gmail app from Google page - goes to blank, but can access other Google apps.

  1. Have checked that redirect block is turned off.
  2. Enhanced (Firefox) tracking is on for Google site, but No trackers know show, and Protection Settings are Normal
  3. Privacy Badger shows only "ssl.google-analytics.com" tracker is detected, and blocked
  4. Have tested in Firefox Safe Mode, but no joy
  5. Have not tried clearing Firefox cache yet

Hi philipj.louw, do your cookie settings allow cross-over between different Google sites? Please see the first two replies in this thread.

Hi, thanks for the prompt response! I am not sure whether my cookie settings allow cross-over between different Google sites (would that be set up in Google account?), but I cleared the cookie cache, and can now find Gmail log in page and progress to the Inbox. Thanks for your support!
