Why are my bookmarks no longer automatically opening when starting Firefox 131?

Do you mean the bookmarks sidebar?
Are you using "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear the browsing history? In Firefox 127+ the sidebar state is stored in sessionstore.jsonlz4 in the Firefox profile folder as part of session data and is no longer stored in xulstore.json. If you clear the browsing history when you close Firefox, then the sidebar state is lost.
On Mac closing Firefox can be more complicated because you can close all open windows, but keep Firefox running with the menu bar visible or minimized in the Doc.
Make sure to use "Quit Firefox" with all windows still open, especially if you want to use "Restore Previous Session". Otherwise check "History -> Restore Previous Session" and "History -> Recently Closed Tabs/Windows".

Thanks bunches. Removing the clear history and then quitting does indeed automatically load my bookmarks sidebar upon opening Firefox. However, what I also noticed was that when removing the clear history button in settings it also removes the check mark for the clear data and cookies button. So do I now have to somehow manually clear my data and cookies or does Firefox automatically do that every so often?

Using "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" to clear cookies keeps cookies with an allow exception. In 102+ version toggling this setting makes changes to the "Clear history when Firefox closes" settings and those settings prevail. So best is to use the "Clear history when Firefox closes" settings and not rely on "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed".
