update not loading
Against my better judgement I updated to FF 12 from 3.6. I figured things couldn't get much worse since 3.6 only loads about half a page on any site anyway.
Wrong! FF 12 greyed out the entire screen, would not close out and just generally locked up the whole computer. I did a System Restart and assumed I would go back to my old FF. No such luck. It won't load at all either.
I'm done with FF. What began with such high hopes and great promise is now just garbage. Updates being issued every few days is not helping. I'm wiping all references to it from the computer.
Thank goodness I moved all my bookmarks to IE last week. Little did I know. If you had told me two years ago that IE would be my default browser I would never have believed it.

I hope you have more luck with using IE.
Unfortunately if firefox or your System is not working, a simple upgrade from a dysfunctional Firefox 3.6 to Firefox 12 may not work.
There are things that you could try, including a clean install after deleting the Firefox program files, and using a new profile, see basic troubleshooting
Thank you for your reply. I do appreciate your efforts but really this is far too complicated. I tried this once before, about two years ago and the instructions for changing the profile were so difficult to follow - they've obviously been updated since then - that things got completely fouled up. In an effort to regain my footing I went to System Restore which refused to accept a restore date - ANY date - and locked up. I can't remember now what happened after that. I wound up getting a new computer (for an unrelated reason) and regretfully went from XP to Win7. I am having exactly the same problem on Win7 as I had before. This time, in addition to the usual problems, it also blocked my Kaspersky license.
No browser is worth this.
Your message did not arrive until about half an hour ago and I only found it as I was scrambling to contain a serious problem on Thunderbird.
Apparently messages for two mailboxes have not been delivered for TWO MONTHS. One of them is this box which I don't often use, and the other is for an online antique shop I operate. I couldn't believe that traffic had gone absolutely dead, and I checked the box at least once a day. Since setting IE as my default browser today it seems to have stimulated Thunderbird - no, it doesn't make any sense to me either, but that's what happened. All of a sudden messages appeared out of nowhere in both boxes.
Creating a new profile will; all being well; need only a few mouse clicks by the time Firefox 13 comes out in a few weeks. Maybe it ill be worth you coming back in a few weeks time.
Thanks for the suggestion, John. I will look at the new version.
Firefox is pre released as an aurora and a beta version. If you wish to try out the beta version you may do so now without waiting by downloading from
There are some minor risks in trying a Beta version, but the new install along with the facility to easily test new profiles may be beneficial to you.
Please note that if you do uninstall Firefox do NOT use any options from Firefox or Windows that mention removing personal data, because that will try to remove all profiles for ALL normally installed Firefox versions, and destroy your bookmarks and passwords.
If you do use new or test profiles I suggest as a precaution
- always use an empty folder if you create them manually (because you may easilly loose whatever else is contained in the folder )
- do not rename or delete profiles unless you are very familiar with the system (profile names and folder paths then mismatch and it is easy to make mistakes) if you stop using a profile merely remove the shortcut to it.
