Bookmarks disappeared when upgraded to 4, how do I recover bookmarks?

When I updated to ver 4 my bookmarks were lost. The previously asked questions help section accomplished nothing for restore or backup.

Hopefully the directory is still on a server somewhere since all my job search and most of my military history sites were in the bookmarks.

Having been a Novell program administrator in the distant past, I understand the need for program upgrades, but this kind of not quite ready upgrades is what drove me away from MS Explorer. Please do not become like them.

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
