IMAP: Moving messages to Local Folders does not delete them from Gmail

sined

Hello,

I would like to understand how to configure Thunderbird with IMAP accounts so that moving messages to Local Folders automatically removes them from the mail server.

I am currently experiencing this issue with Gmail.

1. Manual message moving

When I manually move an email from the Gmail Inbox to a Thunderbird Local Folder, the message is successfully moved locally. However, on the Gmail server, the message remains in the Inbox and is marked as read instead of being deleted.

2. Automatic message filters

I have configured message filters in Thunderbird to automatically move certain incoming emails to Local Folders.

The messages are successfully moved to the specified Local Folders, but instead of being deleted from Gmail, they appear to be archived and remain on the server.

Expected behavior:

- When I manually move an email from an IMAP folder to a Local Folder, it should be removed from the mail server. - When a message filter moves an email to a Local Folder, it should also be removed from the mail server. - Messages moved to Local Folders should retain their original read/unread status.

My questions:

1. How should Thunderbird be configured to achieve this behavior? 2. Are there specific settings for deleting messages from an IMAP server after moving them to Local Folders? 3. Does Gmail require additional IMAP configuration to ensure that moved messages are actually deleted rather than archived? 4. Is there a recommended way to configure message filters for this purpose?

My goal is to use Thunderbird Local Folders for storing emails while removing the original messages from the Gmail server to free up storage space.

Thank you for your help.

I do not see what you describe. When I move a message from the Thunderbird Inbox of a Gmail account to a local folder, it disappears from both the TB Inbox and Gmail's webmail Inbox. It does, however, still remain in Gmail's All Mail folder, which is the expected behavior per my Gmail options.

Here are my settings on Gmail (Forwarding and POP/IMAP):

IMAP access: (access Gmail from other clients using IMAP)

When I mark a message in IMAP as deleted: [ ] Auto-Expunge on - Immediately update the server. (default) [x] Auto-Expunge off - Wait for the client to update the server.

When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible IMAP folder: [x] Archive the message (default) [ ] Move the message to the Trash [ ] Immediately delete the message forever

(I might change that last one to "Move the message to the Trash.")

Here are Google's own recommended settings for Thunderbird. They differ from mine, but mine work for me, so I don't plan to change them:

Here are my Account Settings in Thunderbird for this account:

<Account Settings | Server Settings | Server Settings>

When I delete a message:

[x] Move it to this folder: Trash on Gmail [ ] Just mark it as deleted [ ] Remove it immediately
