It might be your IP address is blocked, it might be that you are somehow attaching spam (such as an antivirus ad), but it is not the email client. Gmail is quite specific, but thunderbird works well with Gmail. Such problems may be easy or very difficult to resolve, but I assure you that Thunderbird is only a messenger in this. With more details, someone here may offer suggestions on how to pursue the problem.
