TWO PROBLEMS (maybe related) 1. My display of messages has gotten into vertical format. I want to go to classic format. To do this I click on the three bars in the extreme upper right of my screen,, then go. to View in the dialog box, but then in the next one it won't allow me to to uncheck vertical view or to check classic view.

2. As I am looking at a message, across the top of the screen is a ribbon showing all the messages in my inbox. I wanna get rid of this ribbon because in order to get back to my list of messages I have to scroll all the way to the left until "inbox" appears. This is time-consuming and a nuisance.

I have reinstalled Thunderbird twice; that doesn't help.

Reinstalling is rarely a solution. Instead of attempting to untick vertical view, tick classic view Manually close the tabs across screen and I suggest reviewing settings>general and then 'Window Layout' to adjust tab settings.
