I'm using Thunderbird The font size on the Mail window where the email are listed is waaay too small. Thunderbird is pretty much unusable to me now. I need larger text than 1/16" tall. Could you Thunderbird developers please make a way to enlarge it the font in the Mail window ?

For many years I used the add on Theme and Font Changer and it worked great. A week ago I got my MacBook Pro back from Apple with a new logic board and battery. The back up drive didn't work. (I'm sending it to Seagate for data recovery.). I had to reinstall Thunderbird. The font on the Mail window is too small.

I downloaded the file for Theme and Font Changer but when I try to install it I get an error message saying that the file is corrupt.

In version 91*

  • click on 'Menu app icon' - icon has 3 lines
  • click on 'Preferences

First images shows what you see after selecting 'Preferences'

  • click on 'General'
  • Scroll to the bottom
  • click on 'Config Editor' button.
  • You will see a friendly warning - accept the risk.

Second image top half shows where to type and what to look for

  • In search type : pixels
  • look for this line: layout.css.devPixelsPerPx

the default is a negative value: -1.0

  • click on the pencil icon to edit the value

Second image bottom half shows where to alter data and how to save it:

  • You can try typing a positive value such as 1.20 or 1.25 or 1.5 or 2.0
  • click on the tick icon to save your entry.

Image shows I typed 1.5, but if too big then go back and try 1.25 Do not type larger than 2.0 because you may start to have other problems which can be fixed but are not so straight forward.

Thank you very much Toad-Hall for your reply. I had already tried that and it didn't make any changes to the Mail window font size on my MacBook Pro. Someone else said that it didn't work for them either, but that it will work to increase the font size when one has an external monitor.

Here is how I fixed the problem and got a readable font size back. I got the problem fixed by reading posts at https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/theme-font-size-changer-fixed/?src=search and doing a Brave browser search on how to increase the font size on my MacBook Pro. The Theme and Font Changer doesn't work for my 91.3.0 version of Thunderbird. I had hoped that it would, but when I tried to install the file it said that the file was corrupt. I don't need it anyway, and neither do any of you. I was going to help you all soon, but now that Toad-Hall made their post, it prompted me to stop everything else and explain what you all need to do.

The first step that gave a lot of improvement was to go to Config Editor and increase the value at font.size.systemFontScale from 100 to 265. I tried 300, then 275, then 250, but they were too much of a change and I settled on 180. The font was still too small.

The next change I made to increase the font size to make everything on the Mail window look acceptable to me was to search in the Brave browser how to increase the font size on my MacBook Pro. I found a great article at https://macreports.com/how-to-change-the-text-size-in-macos/ I was instructed to go to System Preferences, click on Displays, then select Scaled. It was set to Default. The best setting for me to increase the font size was to click on the box two from the left of Default. (It is just to the right of the box that says Larger Text. If you have a Windows computer I don't have any advice for you, as I don't know Windows very well.

Those two changes changed the text size in the Mail window from what seemed like about 1/16" tall for capital letters to about 5/16" tall for capital letters. What a relief it was to no longer have to strain my eyes to read the text ! I was ready to start looking for another email program. I don't have to do that now, and I don't think that any of you will have to either.
