can't log into support anymore & thunderbird doesn't work/load

Firstly I can't log into support anymore. It won't email me a new password & won't allow me to register again as my email address is already on file? Now using a friends email address to post this. Please help resolve this issue.

Secondly, TB crashed & now when I open it all my accounts aren't there or any emails/folders etc... & it asks me to input new accounts. Can someone let me know which folder contains the accounts so I can open them & leave TB pointing at that folder. I've had to do it in the past but I can't recall the location of them & a search was fruitless. Thanks.

If you are using ccleaner, there was a version a couple weeks ago that deleted users' prefs.js file that contains all your settings. If that file is missing from your profile you can restore it from a backup.

Otherwise, see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Recovering_a_missing_profile

Please post your results here.

Thanks, can you let me know where the back up folder is with the js file. I'm not using ccleaner & the update appeared ok the first couple of times I opened tb but after it crashed all information so far looks lost.

It is good practise to keep an externally stored backup of any important documents or files or images on your computer, which you would not want to lose. Emails are documents which you may want to keep backup copies.

You would have needed to have created a backup of your 'profile name' folder. You may have done this via setting a schedule or you may have just done a manual 'Copy & Paste' of the folder and stored it on an external device.

re :all information so far looks lost Make sure Thunderbird is closed. Make hidden files and folders visible:

Assuming you are using Windows OS, locate this directory: C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\<Profile name>\

'profile name' folder is typically called 'xxxxxxxx.default' where the 'x's are letters and numbers.

If you are talking about a pop mail account:

  • click on 'Mail' folder

If you are talking about an imap mail account:

  • click on 'ImapMail' folder
  • click on mail account name
  • make sure 'Size' column header is visible showing size of files.
  • make sure all files and folders are visible in that window.
  • Post image of what you see.

If you see mbox files (no extension) with a good size, then these are the emails.

If you have no backup then it may be easier to create a new profile and add the mail accounts.

Use 'Profile Manager' to create a new profile. Read section 'Creating a new profile'

Then, before you downloaded any emails, download and install the addon 'ImportExportTools' and use it to import the mbox files from the 'broken' profile name into the new profile name.

However, if you use imap mail accounts, after creating the imap mail accounts, you should be able to hook up to the emails on the server.

Thanks, I think my old profile is still intact in the folder as I can see all the appropriate files. However I can't import anything using tb import tool as theres no menu in the pop up window. I also can't locate the profile manager either? It just doesn't appear in any of the menus?

Previously I had tb set up opening a window on launch which gave me the option of opening different profiles. Can anyone remind me how this is set up so I can do it again.

No idea why mozilla have to make this so complicated. No explanation as to why tb has reset itself with a new profile either. Very annoying.

Thanks for your suggestions so far.

OK, I installed the add on import/export tool properly this time & managed to import my old profile. The emails appear ok so far. I am in the process of backing this up now & replying to mails again.....I will let you know if any problems persist.

I haven't tried relaunching it yet but I would like to set the launch profile window as a default setting. Can someone point me to the knowledge base info for me to set that up? Thanks,
