I just installed Thunderbird on my PC and then remembered my deceased husband had an old Thunderbird account on this PC. While going through the set up process, it's deferring to his account (asking for his password, etc). I don't want to use his account. I want to disable it and use my e-mail address as the primary (or only?) Thunderbird account. The thing is, I really don't want to delete his account because there are a lot of things (emails from him and pictures of family, etc.) that I don't want to delete. Anyway, I hope this makes sense and gives you enough info to help my dilemma.

Oh, I also have a laptop that I could install Thunderbird on it instead. Perhaps I could do that and then maybe check Thunderbird on the PC in a different way (is there a way to check it like a web-based email)?

Thank you!! Your assistance is very appreciated! Let me know if anything else is needed to assist me. Ryna

This sounds like you're using the same Windows user account, and Thunderbird picked up the existing profile with your husband's existing account. This is what's expected.

I don't want to use his account.

Fair enough. Your options are:

  • Set up your account in the same profile, i.e. you'd always have access to both accounts
  • Create a new profile and set up your account in the new profile. You'd then need to start Thunderbird with the desired profile.
  • Create a new Windows user account, create a new Windows user account. Thunderbird creates a profile automatically when being started the first time. You can then set up your account in the new profile.

The first option would be the easiest one, as you don't have to deal with profiles. For more information about profiles see https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data

If you decide for the first option, you should also consider backing up the existing profile. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-tb#w_backing-up-a-profile

That sounds like a good idea.

There is no such thing as a 'Thunderbird account'. You set up an account with an email provider, e.g. Gmail or Yahoo. Then you use Thunderbird to access mail for that account on your email provider's server, as well as to send mail via your email provider's server. Thunderbird is just one way to access the email account. Regardless of using Thunderbird or not, an account can also be accessed via webmail (i.e. using a browser).

However, depending on the account type used with Thunderbird, there may not be any mail left on the server, except new messages. But the existing mail from your husband and pictures of family, etc. may only be accessible via Thunderbird now, because it has been removed from the server. In that case webmail won't help you. Give it a try.
