It was once so easy to add the rules function in Thunderbird now I cannot for the life of me see how to add the rules function nor find where it is at first what happened to it I am using Thunderbird 45.4.0. Can you show me in detail where to go to first add the rule to multiple emails then task it to move to a folder and run the filter whenever I get mail.

Nothing has moved or changed. But if you're looking for "rules" then you may be confusing Thunderbird with another email client. Tools|Message Filters, or right-click an address in an email header and select "create filter from".

Do you mean the filter function? If so you find it under the three bars icon or under Tools if you have Menu bar open. Or you could create a filter from a message, right click on a address in header and choose "Create Filter From"
