Can bookmarks be sorted in one go across all folders ?

The sort function seems to work only one level-down : folders nested further down, and the bookmarks they contain, have to be sorted individually.

This is a royal pain, because a) I have many folders on many levels, b) exporting and importing bookmarks in .html format seems to reverse the alphabetical order. Since it would take ages for me to set them straight right after import, I have to do it little by little, every time I open a folder for the first time. This practically doubles the time it takes to use the bookmark panel.

Also, the work will probably never finished, because whenever I have to import this file again in x months for whatever reason, I'll have to start all over again. Is there a workaround ?

P.S. : I tried the Auto-Sort Bookmarks extension, and uninstalled it. It does not work, the interface and help language is so obscure I'm not even sure it's supposed to do this, and besides, the author says he has stopped development and is looking from someone to take it up.

Added question : I don't see any Trash bin in the bookmark manager (aka Library). Is it because I can't find it, or is it just not there ? I see there's an Undo function, but can it undo things more than once ?

Thanks !

Nothing that is deleted inside of Firefox has a "Trash bin" type of feature, it's just gone when you delete it. Only Bookmarks has an "undo" feature, but as you have found out it is very limited.

Auto-Sort Bookmarks may not be around long, the current developers are looking for someone to take that extension over.

As aggravating as it is, the single level sort is a planned feature, and many of us do prefer to sort the upper level while the folders levels don't get sorted. Individual folders can be sorted individually; a 'pain' for some while a wanted feature by other users.

One undocumented feature that few users ever stumble across, is that putting Separators in the main level will limit a "sort" to between Separators, which is how I have my main level setup. I only sort the lower part of my bookmarks, and leave the upper section in an order of "most likely to be used".

Thanks for the unfortunate confirmation, Edmeister...

That being said, I don't understand why people would want sort not to propagate down the folder structure, at least by default.

Windows Explorer sorts everything in a given way across the board (alphabetically, mainly), and then, users can selectively change this as they please, either for specific folders, or starting from a mid or top-level folder of their choice, and ordering Windows to propagate their preferred type of view down from there.

Is there a way to import/export html bookmarks without inverting the alphabetical order ?
