i backed up my bookmarks by using the backup option in the bookmarks library, id backed up to my desktop fine. I uninstalled mozilla firefox and reinstalled it because i was having a problem. now when i go to import the file it appears as an html document and i saved it as a JSON file. when i try to import using both the JSON import and HTML it does not allow me to see this file

Are your sure You did backup not export? Cause when you do export, Firefox saves file in HTML format, but when you do backup Firefox saves file in JSON format. There is no way to switch to other format in save dialog.

If your file doesn't contain any private data (witch you want to keep personal), you might pase content of that file in this topic for further investigation.

Make sure that the bookmarks backup file has the correct (lowercase) file extension:

  • .html for a HTML backup
  • .json for a JSON backup

You can check the file type via the right-click context menu of that file and open the Properties.

If you are not sure about the file type then you can open the file in Firefox via "Firefox > New Tab > Open File" or "File > Open File".

A JSON backup will show as one long text line without line breaks and a HTML backup shows as a web page with clickable links.

A JSON backup starts with: {"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded":
An HTML backup starts with: <!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1>
