italic text windows had an index that allowed instant change of fonts baed on percent change desired.

You can try using Zoom. This will increase/decrease the size of everything on the page. You can try hitting CTRL and + a few times to try it out. CTRL and 0 will return it to normal size.
If that isn't what you are looking for you, you might want to look into some of the Accessibility features in Firefox - Make Firefox and web content work for all users options. There is lots of good information in that article.

There is a +- Zoom button in the Customize Palette that you can move to a toolbar.
