saving bookmarks ctrl-D doing nothing

firefox v 112.0.2 64 bit windows 11 home 22H2 22621.1635. Sometime in the past 2 weeks when I use ctrl-D to create a bookmark, I get the dialogue box and check SAVE but the bookmark is not added. I can delete bookmarks, I just cannot create new ones. I have renamed places.sqlite and xulstore.json to no avail. Any suggestions to correct?

Clear your Firefox cache and cookies and try to Start Firefox in Safe Mode
