I too find this extremely annoying. I regularly download .csv data files from the National Center for Education Statistics for work and I need to open them directly without saving. I generally do not want these files saved as they are purely temporary. Please return the traditional download box with the "Open File" option.

As a workaround in the meantime, go to about:config and change browser.download.improvements_to_download_panel from true to false. This will bring back the traditional window for now. Hopefully this helps others who find this and are as annoyed as I.

This has been annoying me as well and finally took a look.

I think the answer is two fold action which is a bit strange :)

Firstly download a CSV file and then right click on it in the download list and select "always open similar files"

Then go to the settings general page and the CSV now appears in the list and you can tell it to open excel or what ever program you use.

why you can't just add csv to the download actions list seem a bit daft :)

Version 98 made a number of changes to downloading. Now the file is downloaded to an unwanted destination even when you open in an external application. In about:config there is a preference which you can alter to allow you to choose a destination.

As you noticed, Firefox 98 changed the standard behavior from "ask what to do" (before) to "save file" (now). After the file is saved, it is added to the Downloads list and by default, the Downloads list drops open for one-click access.

If you prefer the file to be sent to an external application automatically, here's what you can try:

(1) The content-type for those files might already be on the Applications list on the Settings page. This article has the steps for changing an action there:

Manage file types and download actions in Firefox

(2) If the file type you want to manage (in this case Excel) is not listed there yet, try this first: open the Downloads list, right-click the file, and choose "Always Open Similar Files".

Firefox then should add that file type to the Applications list with a "Use [default application]" action.

If you prefer to decide every time, you can use the steps in the previously mentioned article to change it to an "Always Ask" action.

(3) If the "Always Open Similar Files" menu item is missing for these downloads, the site might be misidentifying the file as generic binary content instead of identifying it as a specific type.

This is harder to work around. I can suggest an add-on if needed.

Well, Firefox was always writing the file to disk, but it was hidden before. Firefox 98 changed from saving downloads in the Windows Temp folder for "Open with [relevant application]" to saving them in your default downloads folder. It's not possible to pass a file to an application without saving it somewhere.

This change addressed problems with data loss for users who could not re-download files they forgot to save after they were removed from the Temp folder. However, now users who preferred those files to be "out of sight, out of mind" are faced with the task of cleaning them up manually.

Firefox 98 has a "Delete" item on the right-click context menu for items on the Downloads list. That deletes the file from disk and leaves a notation on the history that the file is missing/removed. You can use that to remove files you do not want to keep. But yes, it's an extra step.

Many users have expressed the view that they preferred Firefox using the Temp folder for "Open with [relevant application]". I don't know whether a new option will be added for that in a later version.

What I'm doing for now is this set of settings:

(1) Change the default download folder to a "temp" folder I created (2) Set Firefox to always ask where I want to save a file so I can choose a real folder when I want to keep the file
