How do I change Thunderbird's icon back to the older version? The new version looks a lot like Signal's icon. When I have a taskbar full of icons, I have to look carefully to make sure I'm selecting the correct icon for the app I want to switch to. It's annoying. Thanks

I open Thunderbird and see the list of received emails as usual and I have a "Viewing Pane" on the right. In the viweing pane I can see a portion of the email. However, there is a line going through the top portion of the viewing pane email and I cannot see what is under the line. I then fully open the email and the line is still there.

I have tried everything I can think of to fix this to no avail. I have even shut down Viewing Pane in settings and even then when I open an email it is still there.

I am trying to get Thunderbird to function in similar manner of Outlook Classic but the simplest of settings such as viewing pane just won't work. Thunderbird is up to date and Cache cleared. I have attached two photos to show what I am seeing.

I am trying to set up a visualization of the columns of the main interface. Here's what I do:

  1. Click on the list icon in the top right corner.
  2. Uncheck the columns I want to hide. Specifically, From (CB), Recipient (CB), and Correspondents (CB).
  3. Apply the selection to all folders: click on the icon in the top right corner, apply columns to.. > folders and its children... > select account > Confirm

These actions produce immediate results. However, the next day or a few days later, when I reopen the program, the column display changes. Sometimes in the main folder (inbox), sometimes in the subfolders.

Is this a known bug? Is there anything I can do to keep the desired column configuration stable?

For the life of me I can't understand the options in View>Folders. The folders in my 3 accounts are sorted differently. In all 3 accounts I simply want 4 folders visible: Inbox, Sent, Spam and Trash. I've already tagged them as 'Favorite Folders' Making selections in the - View>Folders is very confusing for me. Why are there 2 Favorite folders in the list??

First I am very frustrated that someone decided to change the default to show all messages in threads. How do I globally disable this for every profile on my system. Additionally how do I disable it in one pass for all top level folders at the moment I have to change one top level folder at a time on every system I use thunderbird on, as I have over 100 folders this is very inconvenient. How do I modify a new thunderbird installation so all users and profiles default to threads being turned off.

Hi, I’m having a recurring UI issue in Thunderbird with the toolbar above the message preview pane.

After some time of using Thunderbird, the area between the message list and the message preview becomes visually corrupted. The toolbar where the Reply / Reply All / Forward buttons should appear either disappears completely or turns into a broken/glitched gray bar.

I attached a screenshot showing the problem.

What I already tried:

Restarting Thunderbird Starting in Troubleshoot Mode Disabling all add-ons Resetting UI/customization settings

These actions help only temporarily. After some time, the issue comes back again.

Additional info:

Windows 11 64-bit Latest Thunderbird version The problem seems random, but happens multiple times per day It affects usability because I lose quick access to reply buttons and message actions

Has anyone experienced something similar or knows what may cause this? Humanity invented email clients 50 years ago and somehow we’re still fighting disappearing buttons like it’s experimental Soviet software. Beautiful continuity of civilization.

Thanks.

I'm on a new Windows 11 desktop with two monitors. Everything's been working just fine up until around 26th April (two weeks ago) when the native Thunderbird new mail notifications started appearing in my second monitor, rather than my main display. I had made no changes at all myself.

I've been through all the fixes suggested via Google (toggling the displays; checking Windows notification settings), but none of those fixes have made any difference. I switched to using Windows system notifications for a while, but I really don't like them.

Might this be something in a Thunderbird update itself? It just doesn't seem to be detecting the primary monitor at all. All my other app notifications continue to show on the primary display.

Has anyone else encountered this or have any other solutions I could try?

Thanks, Averill

My windows 10 machine died on me recently, but I was able to recover all my Thunderbird Email files from the old hard drive. However, the Thunderbird settings I was using under Windows 10 did not transfer over to the new machine and there is one particular issue which is driving me crazy and I don't know how to fix:

Basically, on my previous machine I frequently filtered my emails using the threaded option based on the Subject field. However, under Windows 10 the filter I was using would ignore the "Re:" in the subject line of such threads and so every message in the thread was displayed as if the various instances of "Re:" simply weren't there. However, on my new machine Thunderbird threads messages as if each instance of "Re:" represents a new thread! How do I fix this?

The spacing of the Subject column label is inconsistent and apparently not under the control of a user. In the graphic with yellow notations, the leading space for Subject is much larger than any of the other column labels shown.

Also, in the graphic with red notations, the leading space for Subject is even larger; I "applied columns to ... Folder ..." yet both folders are not the same as the leading blank space for the Subject column header is different from the "copy from" folder.

I cannot find anywhere that this is controllable by the user. Please advise on both issues: too much space on the Subject column before the word Subject and the inconsistency of the Apply Columns To feature.

Thank you.

My inbox is now put in alphabetic order thanks to one of the newest updates. I want it at the TOP. Can you fix this? In Thunderbird I now have to manually drag it to the top each morning.

When I open email in outlook my Inbox still appears at the top where it should be.

I hope this can be fixed sooner than later.

If this isn't the right place to post this please provide an email to post to. The website is not user friendly enough to be of any help to me.

I have multiple email adresses for different purposes, but all of the incoming emails are sent to the Local Folders inbox, where I have separate folders to save emails for the each purpose. I am able to manually sort the folders in the order that I prefer, however each time I shut down Thunderbird and then restart it, the folders end up in seemingly different random order each time. Is there a way to ensure the manually sorted order of the folders does not change?

I have an IMAP account with three folders in it that I need to keep below quota. They are Inbox, Sent, and Deleted. Among my local folders I have Archive of Inbox, Archive of Sent, and Archive of Deleted. I have three message filters that move old messages from the IMAP folders to their corresponding local folders. I understand that these filters have to be run manually, not automatically, because their source folders need to be set before each run. None of the filters is enabled, I'm not sure what this setting does but I think it prevents Thunderbird running the filter automatically. Each of the filters has Manually Run checked and all other options left unchecked. The retention policy for each IMAP folder is 'Use my account settings'. The relevant account setting is 'Don’t delete any messages'. I would therefore expect messages to remain in my IMAP folders until I run the filters, but that does not seem to be what is happening. I delete several messages per day and they go from the inbox into the deleted folder, but the total number of messages in that folder doesn't increase - in fact it sometimes decreases whilst I'm working. It is as though a ghost is running the filters when I'm not watching. Can anybody tell me what is happening?

When using message filters "Run Now" is often greyed out after running a filter and remains greyed out after the filter has completed filtering. (Hung up?) This does not happen if the filter does not find any matching messages. Clicking on another filter and then returning to the first one returns the "Run Now" button to active (not greyed out). Not sure, but the problem might be associated with filters that copy a message file to a Local folder, or delete messages, or move messages to Trash, or all three. I'm stumped. The problem started recently and I'm not aware of any changes I made to Thunderbird.
