Thunderbird 153 in Linux Mint 22.1 XFCE.

I use Waterfox installed via flatpak as my default browser. Unfortunately Thunderbird's Oauth2 verification pages don't open correctly in that browser, due to some of the browser add-ons I have installed in Waterfox.

I also have Firefox and Chromium installed. I want Thunderbird to always ask which browser to use before it opens a link. I followed instructions I found in multiple places on the internet:

  • Open config editor
  • Set network.protocol-handler.warn-external.http and network.protocol-handler.warn-external.https to true
  • Restart Thunderbird
  • Click a https (or http) link in an email: Waterfox opens
  • Settings-General-Files & Attachments: There is now an Action dropdown for https (or http) with options 'Always ask', 'Use Web Browser (default)', 'Use other...' and 'Delete Action'. The current selection is 'Use Web Browser (default).
  • Change Action to 'Always ask'
  • Restart Thunderbird
  • Click a https (or http) link in an email: Waterfox opens again, even though 'Always ask' is still the selected action.
  • Restart Thunderbird.
  • Settings-General-Files&Attachments: The https (or http) action has now changed back to 'Use Web Browser (default)'

How do I get Thunderbird 153 to ask which browser to open for a web link?

Essentially, I’m wondering if thunderbird can be used to store old emails on a hard drive. I am wondering because I would like to be able to access them without the ability to use the internet because it would be on an old computer with no WiFi card or Ethernet capabilities. I would like to be able to store all of these emails with as little connected to the internet as possible.

Recently it's a daily occurrence that I must enter the password for my SMTP server. I always check "Use Password Manager to remember this password" but it doesn't help. The next day I'll have to go through this again.

I power on my machine multiple times each day, and I use Thunderbird each time. It doesn't happen each time. It seems to happen only the first time I use Thunderbird each day. This is new behavior. Before it would happen now and then, now it's daily.

I don't have a Primary Password. No need for it.

If you need to see the message I can send it to you, but I'm not attaching it right now because it shows my email address and the smtp destination. Maybe I'm being too careful.

On Saturday morning 27 June 2026 I tried to login my Orcon email account via Thunderbird (which I have been using for a long time). But my login didn't work, I got a message saying "login to POP3.orcon.net.nz with username habitation failed." On 30th June 2026 I reported the problem to Orcon.

Orcon gave me the following settings for Thunderbird. I have done that and even made a new account: Incoming Server Type: IMAP Mail Server: imap.orcon.net.nz Port: 143 SSL: Off Authentication: On (username and password required)

Outgoing SMTP Server: Mail Server: smtp.orcon.net.nz Port: 25 SSL: Off Authentication: Off

Since then I have spent many hours and going around in circles with Orcon's Technical Support to resolve this, but no luck. They blame Thunderbird. I used Thunderbird Troubleshoot Mode. The message that comes up reads: login to server mail orcon.net.nz with username habitation failed. Please can you check that your server settings above are correct? And if there is a bug? Irma

I'm trying to dump Windows and move to Linux and I need to migrate my existing mail. The Export tool says it exports accounts, messages, address books, and settings. I've done this and have my Linux Mint Thunderbird installation up and running. The problem is the only "messages" it exports is the Inbox. Not "Sent" or any of the other 25 folders I've created to organize my mail. Is there ANY tool available that will export everything and then import it into a new installation?

I for sure don't want to have to dual boot just to do email. If I can't accomplish a complete cut-over, I'll abandon Linux and stick with Windows (ugh!).

I'm actually using Mint right now and I would need to go back to Windows to get that version number. Suffice it to say, as of yesterday, it was up to date with the latest Windows version.

Steps to reproduce:

Open Thunderbird. Account settings: Check "Check for new messages every 10 minutes". Keep Thunderbird running forever.

Actual results:

Sometimes Thunderbird stops checking messages for no reason. No checks are done for many days.

Expected results:

It should always check messages every 10 minutes, keep checking forever.

I successfully linked / synced the thunderbird calendar with the iCloud calendar. Calendar entries manually entered in iCloud or iPhone calendar are successfully synced and are visible in the thunderbird mail. The other way round, syncing the existing entries in the Thunderbird calendar does not work. They do not appear in the iCloud or iPhone calendar. Searching the internet, the specific Thunderbird or Apple help-sites did not provide an obvious solution for this problem. I went through all (or nearly all) recommendations given by Apple, no success to sync from Thunderbird to iCloud.

Any suggestion what to modify or adjust

Bug?: In Address Book, I create a new Group list. In several of my Contacts, the individual has two different email addresses. I successfully add a person with their Primary email address.

BUT, when I try to add a secondary email (i.e., add the same person a second time but using their non-primary email address), the Group List will re-list the primary address a second time and not accept a secondary email address.

Is there a fix for this?

I have 13 email accounts in Thunderbird. Most of the emails work flawlessly. However, in some accounts , before I read them, the original emails are "automatically" duplicated in other folders (for instance, "important", and or "save" folders). After reading the emails in my inbox, I have to open each folder where the duplicates are and wait for the emails to disappear "automatically". It's a pain b/c the folders are hi-lighted and therefore I can't tell if I received a new email in my inbox or is it an old one I just forgot to delete in another folder. How can I stop this from happening?

Steps:

1. Email received in inbox; inbox high-lighted in blue 2. Open inbox in order to see emails, some folders (on the right-hand side) are also high-lighted in blue. The contain duplicates of emails in the inbox. 3. Deal with emails in inbox (open, read, keep, file, delete) 4. Some folders are still high-lighted in blue ( for instance, in uploaded image "all mail" and important") 5. Open high-lighted folders which deletes folders that were deleted in the inbox or if not deleted in the inbox, emails remain in the folder but the boldness turns off and the folder is no longer highlighted in blue. How do I stop the original emails from duplicating to other folders?

I found two horrible bugs in Thunderbird and the script that migrates from Seamonkey mail to Thunderbird. I just tried switching earlier this year because I really liked the way Seamonkey mail did things, but so many websites considered Seamonkey out of date and unsupported that I tried to fully switch from Seamonkey to Firefox and Thunderbird.

The migration script made one inbox from Seamonkey into two main mail folders with inboxes in Thunderbird. And my Seamonkey mail folder had not only the usual Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Junk and Trash folders, but well over a dozen specialty inboxes where incoming mail was stored after filtering. And it had more than 10 years of archived (not compressed, just old mail from Inbox and Sent) in the main folder as well. The script failed to move all the mail, in fact, didn't move any old mail, but instead made new main folder, Inbox, Sent, etc and treated the existing mail as a separate mail account in the old main folder. I tried to fix that, and then T-bird or its filter script started deleting msgs from the old mailboxes, treating them as junk or something. I had the original copies from Seamonkey, copied them again and Thunderbird axed them again. Part of the problem was that the Thunderbird migration script did not copy the filtering system I had set up into the Thunderbird folders. Another was that the script did not move the junk mail settings and thought everything from the Seamonkey folder was junk. I'm pretty sure it failed to move my addressbook and other key files as well. This set of collosal processing errors developed in the years after Thunderbird was split off from Seamonkey instead of being kept synced with the excellent way Seamonkey handled email. As it stands, Thunderbird is just a big destructive virus.

In short, the migration code made major mistakes migrating from its predecessor program, and Thunderbird added some killer errors on top of the migration script. I have filed a bugzilla report a couple of months ago but don't have any realistic hope that Mozilla can or will fix the issues I found.

I need an email client that can take over at least the mail folders from Seamonkey so I can keep on using those folders and a POP/SMTP connection to transfer mail through my ISP's mail handler.

Send your reply to John <fridthof@gmail.com>. If it goes to my democritus7@att.net address, I am not likely to find it in the mountain of email that's gathered since I downloaded it previously.

I changed Google accounts from mine to my husband's so that I could find a certain email. Finished and signed back into my Google account. Shut everything and went to my Thunderbird. My entire inbox of emails for my gmail account were not there. Why would I lost those if I was not dealing with Thunderbird, but Google online?? Google online only shows those emails that I haven't downloaded to Thunderbird. Google online did not show my current gmail Thunderbird Inbox, yet it's gone from Thunderbird. I'm sick about it... prescious emails lost. Is there any way to retrieve my Inbox?

I've successfully connected to a hosted Exchange server through EWS and NTLM authentication (kudos BTW). But there is a problem - often during operations against EWS I'm presented with "Login to account XXX failed" "Login to server YYY with account XXX failed". I can ignore it (cancel) and it will work for seconds or minutes but eventually reappear. Sometimes it's very frequent, sometimes is here and there. TL;DR; connection works, I can read directories and e-mails.

From looking at development tools I see these scenarios: 1. POST requests return 200 always (no messsage of course) 2. Eventually a POST would return 401. Then Thunderbird issues a GET, it returns 401 as well but response includes header WWW-Authenticate: NTLM XXXXXX. Then another GET is issued containing header "Authorization" with the value from previous response. This time it gets 200 and continues without POST requests without a dialog. 3. Sometimes there are more POST requests with 401 (I assume in parallel) before a GET is issued and then I see a dialog. Sometimes it recovers (regardless of whether I cancel or retry), sometimes gets stuck with 401 with dialog reappearing each time it tries something. This case it's similar in sense that thunderbird issues GET with 401 and WWW-Authenticate header, issues another GET with Authenticate header but still gets 401.

If I had to guess I'd say the problem happens when POST requests are issued in parallel, not sequentially. OTOH it might be a problem at the server, but it isn't very likely.

For whatever reason, although I've had this account for years and regularly contribute I always get this page at startup begging me for more money and even if I donate, I can't get past the begging page.

I am now locked out of the account. No login info works and I'm unable to access years of emails

I have not changed my password since I opened the account and frankly I am as aggravated and pissed off as can be. I can't get to do anything at all but read the page begging me for money even after I just made another contribution and although I haven't changed any login info I keep getting the login failed message
