Dear Thunderbird team I am an avid user of TB (home desktop Windows PCs), but I have been resting on my laurels on v78 for a few years now. I know, shame on me. I would like to upgrade to a stable "modern" release (emphasis on "stable" please). Can you please advise if I should aspire to end up on 115 or 128, and how I might get there ? From reading some older blogs, there is advice that says.... first go to v91, then v102, then v115, and so. That seems a bit tortuous, but I am happy to do so if that is still the recommended approach.

Also, can you advise on how I manage my Profile through all this, do I need to do various exports/imports as I move through these different versions, etc.

Hi all, After receiving emails I select a group and hit delete. The emails turn grey but dont delete . I have to pick them one by one a second time in order for them to delete. This has just started in the last few days. Is there a setting I'm missing? I just want the emails to all delete the first time I hit the delete button. Any help appreciated Dan

I've been using TB over 24 years and it has grown through four systems. A system replacement involves a new CPU, mother board and C: drive. Data exist on other drives that are moved. Sometimes the content is copied from old drives to newer faster larger drives.

Some sections look like they have been replicated further down.

Entries that look like they have accumulated over time.

I had a fourth, but started getting Google popup asking for password, but on 2nd screen to fill in password, prompt that it is corrupt / cannot fix (see screenshot)

Now, I deleted that gmail account completely - there are no stray references to it (no identities, no outgoing SMTP server... never used calendar or any google add-ons; never have synchronized with anything re: Google)

Note: The account deleted is not in use - former business and has not been used for 5 years.

Still getting that Google popup.

Just updated. Big mistake!!! The "spam filter was great", now it's not. Your not allowed to complain because all these people work for free to make it great. But, they just have to change a good thing up so they have something to do. I use to get the rare spam mixed into my mail, and no spam in the junk mailbox. Now since a recent change in the last week, I have spam every where. Duplicate spam too! In my in box, in junk mail. It's like Yahoo mail now. Two pieces of mail, and a spam mailbox with 50 pieces of junk mail. This is just like the weird change a couple of years ago when after you deleted your mail, it just showed up again. That's when I was told how ungrateful I was for complaining. All the poor Mozilla patriots, slaving away to make the World a better place. Changing stuff just to be changing stuff! I guess they want to work at Microsoft. Here comes Windows the Dozen. Greatest yet! Why did I push that upgrade Thunderbird button.

P.S. Watch me get called dumb because Mozilla doesn't have anything to do with Thunderbird. Oh, wait, Mozilla took Thunderbird back. I'm safe!

Hi, A few weeks ago, my desktop PC had to be returned to the manufacturer for repair, so I had to move my email to my laptop. I have 9 email accounts (3x yahoo, 3 x Microsoft, 2 x GMX and a Gmail). I used to train adults how to use a computer or laptop (basic training) so had addresses for different providers, so I was familiar with anything they could throw at me! Some don't get a lot of use now, but I like to keep them, for the odd occasion. All the accounts loaded sweetly at the time, some requiring 2FA, but none needing any App Passwords. A week ago My laptop had a catastrophic problem requiring me to restore to factory defaults. Since then, I have been reinstalling all the programs/apps to get it something like it was before the disaster occurred. Obviously, as part of the process, I had to reinstall Thunderbird. However, I have not been able to get any of the accounts to get set up on Thunderbird. The settings are found in the database and passed as okay, but I've been getting messages like: "Unable to login at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password." I know the settings are correct because I have double-checked them very carefully, and I also use Bitwarden to ensure the Username and Password are correct. Initially I had wondered whether it was just one account that was a problem, and had tried other (alternative and approved) port and security settings but got a "Thunderbird failed to find the settings for your email account" message. I am puzzled, because about 3 weeks ago everything went in so easily, and I completed all nine accounts one after the other in probably less than half an hour, and now I can't complete any. I'm obviously playing with the idea of trying another email program, but also liked the calendar in Thunderbird. I'll attach some screen prints below. I also use Nord VPN, but for a fortnight it didn't matter whether Nord VPN was on or off, Thunderbird was brilliant. Today I was wondering whether that was having an effect, so I switched on Split Tunnelling, and applied Thunderbird, but it made no difference. So my next thought was whether as part of the Factory reset of the Laptop, not all the registry entries for Thunderbird had been cleared, or that there was some files somewhere that had escaped the purge and Thunderbird was still pointing to them. However, that didn't make sense, because I had Uninstalled Thunderbird with BC Uninstaller and deleted entries found after uninstallation, before I reinstalled it. So what can I do other than find some other email product, which seems unlikely at present! Kind regards.

this is an intermittent problem. I haven't been able to detect what causes it to happen.

How can I correct this?

Hello, I installed Thunderbird on a Windows 11 computer and I receive the message to "Set up and Existing email address" When I put in user name, password and email I receive an error message saying the server cannot be found. I also tried deleting and reinstalling the Thunderbird program, but have the same result.

So, how do you put in the needed info to move beyond the error message?

Hi everyone,

Long time, happy TB user and supporter. A new problem has appeared with nebula that I am hoping that the experts here can help me troubleshoot.

When any operation is performed on the emails in one particular account's Inbox folder, there is a 3-5 second pause where TB freezes. For example, when I try to open an email, I see a blank email tab with `Loading Message...` for a few seconds, before the email shows; when I toggle the read status for an email in the folder by clicking on the gray/green icon, there is a few seconds' delay. During this pause I can hear my CPU fan speed up, so seems like there is a spike in CPU usage. After a few minutes, these delays go away, but then reappear at some point (even though TB has been open the entire time) - possibly after new email has been downloaded from the server.

My overall suspicion is that something in this particular folder's files is triggering Nebula. I need help figuring out what it is and fixing it. This is not bad enough for me to ditch TB but it's definitely annoying AF. Strange part is that it appeared only after the Nebula upgrade, which makes me think this is a code issue not a mailbox file issue.

Setup

  1. Thunderbird 128.3.3esr (64-bit) on Windows 11 23H2
  2. Multiple mailbox accounts, all using POP3 (not IMAP; there is no interaction between TB and the server other than downloading email). Had not changed any settings during the nebula upgrade
  3. The account in question has multiple folders in TB. Filters are used to move messages from the Inbox to different folders (and sometimes, to folders on other accounts). Again, the slow performance is only on the single, Inbox folder in one account, and not any of the other folders or other accounts.
  4. Profile files are on a very fast SSD. I have not been able to detect a peak in disk usage when the pause happens.
  5. The affected folder has 32K emails in it, size on disk 1.5G (+27M for `.msf` file). I have another folder which is 3.1G+20M, that one does not have this problem.

Here's what I have tried, with no changes

  1. Compact all mailboxes
  2. Repair folder for all folders/subfolders
  3. Delete the GLODA to force a rebuild
  4. Troubleshooting mode
  5. Watching the console in developer tools (no relevant errors appear)
  6. Turning on `browser.dom.window.dump.enabled` - no significant errors appear
  7. Turning off hardware acceleration
  8. Updating graphics card drivers
  9. Ensuring that the TB profile folder and windows temp folder is not being indexed by Windows search
  10. Checking the filter logs - no errors

Any suggestions or tips on how to gather more data, are welcome. Thanks!

I neve had the problem that has started in the last year (maybe) after I got the Thunderbird revision(?) I will be in my <tomfluce@gmail.com> account and I send a message to a church address: <bfuu-sjc@googlegroups.com> and another address in the same church, <board@bfuu.org> These are multiple addresses for committees. Then I get "Delivery Status Notification (Failure)" back in my Acct.3 <hhecoordinator@gmail.com> saying that my email sent to these committees was not delivered because this account doesn't recognize or use the address perhaps because I don't have permission. Well my problem is that why Account #3 <hhecoordinator@gmail.com> is involved at all in my message through Acct. 1)<tomfluce@gmail.com> This has confused me thinking I should try again or I find the individual names of the address of the committees---lots of extra time. Any suggestions about how to separate completely these two accounts? Thanks for all Thunderbird has done for me for so many emails helping a program in Haiti for disenfranchised young people. I donated and it sent me to a "Thank You" page that says "Finish installing, and start enjoying Thunderbird." There is nothing to click on to download the app or setup. I need help getting the program on my computer.
