It is happening on both of my computers, laptop and desktop. This is a Windows 7 machine. It was working fine yesterday. Nothing has changed. I called eBay and they couldn't figure it out either!

I assume this may be a issue with eBay's code. Can you try to clear the cache and cookies?

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache. Note: This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to. To clear cache and cookies do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
  2. Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
  3. Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
  4. From the details list, check Cache and Cookies and uncheck everything else.
  5. Now click the Clear now button.

Further information can be found in the Clear your cache, history and other personal information in Firefox article.

Since you have this issue in multiple browsers, could your check the settings in your security software (or related software, such as parental control filtering software) to make sure that it is not blocking scripts from eBay related sites? These include ebay.com, ebaystatic.com, ebayrtm.com, and possibly others.

Could you also try Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings). More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)

Any difference? If eBay works normally, perhaps you have a Firefox extension with a corresponding IE add-on that could explain why both browsers are affected.

The javascript:; that you see when you hover a link is a placeholder, so you know that this is not a normal link.
The actual action is done via an onclick event that run the JavaScript.

If nothing happens when you click a link the make sure that you aren't blocking JavaScript.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

This may be a problem with eBay's code. They have been making small changes to their site's look and feel/layout etc over the past few weeks. I don't know that that's included anything new in the past 24 hours but it's possible.

I'm personally having the same problem and tried to work around it in Safe Mode and by clearing Cache, cookies etc. None worked.

The fact that others are reporting the same problem new to today suggests the only thing that could have changed is on eBay's side.

UPDATE: there are a number of postings on eBay's own customer service and technical pages complaining of similar issues and glitches since yesterday. Some are experiencing it on different pages of eBay's site or with Chrome and Explorer as well as Firefox.

Had same eBay problem which started about a day ago. Did so on multiple computers. No pulldowns (Sort, More Actions, etc.). Would just say javascript;; on lower left of page when hovering or clicking over the pulldowns. Cleared History as suggested by Waka_ and eBay pulldowns are working. Thank you.

I have cleared my cache and history several times to no avail! It's got to be on the eBay site somehow as I tried both of my computers, both in IE and Firefox and on my neighbor's computer. ARGG!!

After your last comment I went to my other computer that exhibited the problem. First confirmed problem still there. Then cleared Cookies and Cache on "everything" (as opposed to today, last hour, etc.). Then without closing FF, tried it and problem remained. Then closed FF and relaunched it and pulldowns now work. I'm a computer dummy so all I can offer is what worked for me.
