Problems with windows in FF

more options

There are two problems that are related to FF windows.

1 - If I have more than three FF windows open and restart FF in any way (reboot, upgrade or manually), only three windows will re-open.

2 - If I open a new window, it sometimes will be moved to between other windows. So if I have window a b and c open and open window d, the order should be a b c d but, most times, it will be a b d c. I don't know if it matters how many windows are open since it doesn't always fail.

On #1, there may be a limit on the number of windows that session restore will re-open, but 3 seems too low. I'm not sure what could cause that.

On #2, I don't know whether it affects the window order, but there is a known issue with Flash in Windows 7 where if you are not using Flash in any window and you launch a new window to a page that uses Flash, if protected mode is enabled, the Flash player may switch the focus to the previous window. Could that be what you're seeing? This thread has more details and a couple workarounds: Opening New Windows and Shockwave Flash.

Thanks for the reply. I looked through al of the settings for a tab quantity but couldn't find one. I agree that if it exists, 3 would not be very useful.

I appreciate the mention about flash but it isn't used on the sites I'm opening when this happens.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

I tried all of the things that were suggested but it still failed. So I uninstalled it completely, downloaded the latest version, 23.0.1, and re-installed.

The limit of 3 is still present. If i have 4 windows open, close all and restart FF, only 3 will open.

The moving around of windows while open is gone. But the order is not kept when it restarts. This is a minor problem compared to the limit problem, though it is very annoying.

Is no one else having this problem? Any suggestions on what i can try now?

(Sorry, that reply was for a different thread.)

Hi usrff, you wrote:

When you say close all, I assume you're using one of these methods:

  • Firefox menu > Exit
  • File menu > Exit

In case this is somehow connected to Firefox's memory for windows closed during your session you could try increasing that from the default value of 3 (a coincidence?) to, say, 10.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste sess and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.sessionstore.max_windows_undo preference and enter your preferred number of windows (I have 10).

Thank you. That seems to have fixed it.

For the record, I normally close the windows using the Task Bars close all option. That's what I did to test your fix. But then I thought to try using the Exit from the menu and, doing it that way, the other problem with the order of the windows, doesn't occur. So is this a problem with Windows or FF? Can you verify it fails for you too by doing this:

- open three or more windows and note their order - close them all using the task bar's close all - open FF and check the order

Hi usrff, when I use the Taskbar Close all windows, only the last window closed re-opens automatically. I have to open the others manually. How do you get multiple windows re-opened automatically??

Anyway, when I restore the closed windows manually from the History menu > Recently closed windows, they are in the order that I last accessed them, not the order I opened them.
