I have two phones and two computers. Firefox and Thunderbird works on 3 of them. Until today, thunderbird worked fine on this computer. Then I started to get this message "Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because connecting to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.ykwc.com failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again." I uninstalled thunderbird to no avail; uninstalled Tbird and deleted the Tbird directory under ...users/(my name)/thunderbird/app data/roaming/. That allowed me to successfully install Tbird. I can receive email on this computer, but i cannot send email. The above message is persistant.

I have contacted my ISP. They indicate that I have all my settings correct. As i indicated, all my other devices work properly.

This is an HP computer running Windows10.

I would be most appreciative of some guidance as to how to fix this problem.

Thank you in advance.

Denis

Firewall - Thunderbird must be set up as an allowed program. Otherwise ports may get blocked. So exit Thunderbird, access Firewall and check all is set up ok.

These are the server settings you should be using: Do as follows to check:

  • Menu icon > Account Settings
  • In LEFT PANE scroll to bottom and below 'Local Folders' account click on 'Outgoing Server SMTP'

It will show a list of all your outgoing servers. You should have one for each email address/mail account

  • Select each in turn until you find the one which has the 'User name' for problem account.
  • Click on 'Edit'

SMTP settings:

  • Description: enter full email address - same as the user name
  • Server name: mail.ykwc.com
  • Outgoing Port: 587
  • Connection Security : STARTTLS (one webage says SSL, but state to use STARTTLS in a help pdf)

It is usual to use STARTTLS with port 587.

  • Authentication Method: Normal Password
  • User name: full email address

If you do not have an smtp server set up for the email address then click on 'Add' and create one.

Then make sure the account is actually using the correct SMTP server. In LEFT PANE

  • select the name of the problem mail account
  • Look bottom right for 'Outgoing Server SMTP'
  • It should be displaying the email address because you put it in the description field.
  • If it is not showing the email address of the account then click on the drop down option and choose the correct smtp settings.
  • DO NOT click on 'Edit SMTP_Server' button because you may end up editing the wrong one.

Now Check your password

  • Menu icon > Settings > Privacy & Security
  • Under 'Passwords' section
  • Click on 'Saved passwords'
  • click on 'Show Passwords'

IF the smtp://account is not listed then it should get saved after a restart and prompt for password.

If smtp://account line is shown but you want to force all the updated settings, then select the smt://account line for that email address and click on 'Remove'.

If all the SMTP settings were completely correct and you did not have to edit or add anything, then reenter the password.

  • Right click on the correct 'smtp:// account line where 'User Name' = problem email address and select 'Edit Password'
  • Completely remove contents and type in the correct password
  • Click on 'Close'

Exit Thunderbird and wait a few moments for background processes to complete then restart Thunderbird.

Suggest you wait for an incoming email to that same account before attempting to send. When sending - If prompted for password:

  • Enter Password and select checkbox to Remember Password before you click on OK
