Have had McAfee support look and they can not find any problems. Based on time of 60.5.3 (20190304124934). 0807:21, it is something with Thunderbird. I am using mail.yahoo.com and using a browser I can receive all emails, just not using Thunderbird after the update. This is a POP account as we have the room and prefer to store emails on this pc.

Try to start Windows in safe mode with networking enabled. - Win10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode

Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode. - https://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe-mode

Does the problem go away?

If safe mode doesn't help, see https://support.mozilla.org/kb/cannot-receive-messages

Hello Chris, Nothing in the Thunderbird in safe mode had any effect. I did not put windows 10 into the safe mode as there is nothing else on the PC that is not working. The inability to receive emails occurred on 3/10 , the same day that Thunderbird was updated to 60.5.3 (20190304124934) was installed. McAfee checked the security program and it is working properly. All things seem to be pointing at the update.

There is a reason for asking, so please do this, and report back.

Ok, the reason I didn't want to put Windows 10 into the safe mode was all the folders we have open and not understanding what Windows 10 has to do with a thunderbird update.

Windows safe mode reliably disables anti-virus software. This is relevant because you're running McAfee anti-virus software, which is know to be problematic as best. https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#McAfee

Windows safe mode is not a cure, it's primarily a troubleshooting step to either confirm or rule out anti-virus software is the problem.

Beyond that you can follow the troubleshooting steps as per the link provided above first. If any of these will fix your problem, you may not need to start Windows in safe mode at all.

You have not given any information about what prevents you from receiving messages, therefore anti-virus software is a likely culprit.

Well that was fun. I tried putting Windows 10 into safe mode. used settings to do that and when the login screen for the PC came up, it would not recognize my password. Had to use Microsoft password to finally get back to here. Another reason i DID NOT WANT TO TRY SAFE MODE. GD caps locks key :(

none of the items, excluding safe mode for windows, help. Why does Mozilla not fix the problem the update caused? I have never put a windows 10 machine into safe mode and after what happened, and yes I am sure I did something wrong but don't know what, I don't think I ever want to try that again. I did have a McAfee support person take remote control of this PC and check all of their security program features. He said everything was working properly.

Also McAfee was pre-installed, then up and running on this PC before I loaded Thunderbird. Thunderbird worked perfectly for 3 weeks, that is how new this pc is, until the 3/10 thunderbird update. Working for 3 weeks with McAfee. Thunderbird update on 3/10, can't receive email? Hmm, sure looks like Thunderbird to me. :(

.... because AV sometimes don't play nice with mail client updates. It is an historical fact repeated every week of the year.

There are no verified problems with 60.5.3 update of Thunderbird that match your description.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cannot-receive-messages previously mentioned is a good article but unfortunately could do with an update.

You might verify that you had correctly started in safe mode - very interesting article https://serverfault.com/questions/433765/how-can-i-tell-if-windows-is-running-in-safe-mode (prior to today I didn't know you could test that)

If still a problem hopefully christ1 can continue to assist - he is an excellent supporter.

Thank you for the information, Wayne. My biggest problem is being from the slide rule era. With our previous PC you hit on of the F keys during start up and go into safe mode. This Windows 10 PC is so much more complicated, especially now with the knowledge that the PC may or may not have gone into safe mode with networking. I did try it, but not being from the IT field, I got worried when the password that I use every time we start the PC was not accepted. I will open the article about safe mode that christ1 sent me and see if I can get it to work.

more options

Ok, restarted windows in Safe mode with networking, in safe mode as I type, then opened Thunderbird in safe mode. No change, Thunderbird connects to mail.yahoo.com server, checks for new messages, in lower left corner shows 1-29 new messages and states that it is downloading new messages. A rectangle in the lower right of Thunderbird appears and starts going green, start from left to right. Gets about half way, then nothing and finally both the new messages message in lower left and downloading rectangle in lower right disappear.

So your account is POP. The server settings look good.

Are you accumulating messages in Inbox? What is the size of your Inbox? Are you compacting folders on a regular basis? Are you creating backups of your profile folder on a regular basis?

Check with Yahoo whether you need to create an app password for your POP account. https://help.yahoo.com/kb/fix-pop-imap-client-sending-receiving-issues-sln3792.html

Even though safe mode didn't work either, I'm not convinced McAfee is innocent here. Therefore make sure to follow the instructions in the support article for McAfee linked above. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1253003#answer-1204848

Or get rid of McAfee altogether, and settle for the built-in Windows Defender. The time for 3rd-party anti-virus apps has gone by, now they only increase your attack surface. https://www.microsoft.com/security/blog/2018/10/26/windows-defender-antivirus-can-now-run-in-a-sandbox/

Am I currently accumulating messages in inbox? On mail.yahoo.com I am accumulating messages. On Thunderbird I am not. (Last message in the in box of Thunderbird was on 3/11 at 1450. What size is my inbox? I have no idea or how to check. Am I compacting folders on a regular basis? I know that Thunderbird did when on the old Windows XP PC, but I can't recall if Thunderbird has on the new Windows 10PC> Am I creating backups of my profile folder on a regular basis? I don't know and have never seen an on screen message from Thunderbird on either the old or new pc. I doubt I need a Yahoo app password as both the existing Thunderbird and the old thunderbird could log into Yahoo mail. This new version could send and receive until the 11th of this month with no problems and to this day when opened, it logs onto Yahoo and reports how many emails are there to be downloaded, but then stops, gives up or who knows what and does not download any of the new mail. I can not get rid of McAfee as I just renewed it for an either year, yesterday. What would happened if I made a profile copy as if I were moving Thunderbird to a new PC and uninstall and then install it again? The final option is to use the existing Thunderbird as a place to keep the mail we want to retain as an archive and go forward using Outlook. Really something we'd prefer to not do, but keeping a browser tab open so that we can see the mail from 3/11 onward is a pain in the rear!

What size is my inbox? I have no idea or how to check.

Check the size of the Inbox file in your profile. Note, it's the one without a file extension. To get to your profile, see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_how-to-find-your-profile

The folder for your POP account is underneath 'Mail'.

Am I creating backups of my profile folder on a regular basis? I don't know

So that's a 'no'. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile

I can not get rid of McAfee as I just renewed it for an either year, yesterday.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't, you may not want to though. I can only hope you'll follow the instructions in the support article for McAfee. At least when McAfee has screwed your mail files one day you'll be grateful to have a backup.

What would happened if I made a profile copy as if I were moving Thunderbird to a new PC and uninstall and then install it again?

That would essentially be a profile backup which, as said before, is always a good idea. It wouldn't help with your actual problem though. Profile files are stored separately from the Thunderbird program files. The program files are static and do not change (except when you upgrade the Thunderbird application version). Because we store profile and program files separately, you can uninstall Thunderbird without losing your messages and settings, and if something goes wrong with a Thunderbird update your information will still be available. It also means that you don't have to reinstall Thunderbird in order to delete your information or troubleshoot a problem.

The final option is to use the existing Thunderbird as a place to keep the mail we want to retain as an archive and go forward using Outlook.

That is entirely up to you. But before that, I'd try to set up your Yahoo account as IMAP. Keep the POP account around until it's clear whether IMAP works any better (or not). For the time being uncheck the option to automatically check for new mail in your POP account settings. When setting up IMAP make sure to use 'Authentication type' 'OAuth2' for both, the incoming, and outgoing Yahoo servers. You may also need to allow cookies in Thunderbird for https://login.yahoo.com or allow cookies altogether.

Also see https://support.mozilla.org/kb/switch-pop-imap-account

There's a brief explanation of the differences between POP and IMAP on Yahoo support. https://help.yahoo.com/kb/pop-settings-sln4724.html

I totally have no idea what to do. I checked and thunderbird will compact all folders when they exceed 20mb. I looked in both profile folders and under mail or anything else, I could not find inbox or it's size. I turned of anti-spam and real time scanning and nothing improved. Tried to import contact to Outlook and that didn't work. Totally frustrated. This should not be such a horrible task. Guess we are saddled with using browser. Thanks for you help. WE SURRENDER :(

more options

I hate to hear the word "surrender". And I've only watched this from afar.

Problem #1 yahoo - we constantly have people complaining about various aspects from spam, to not being able to send or receive mail. And there there is the illustrious history of security at yahoo. I wouldn't touch it with a 50 foot pole. You could switch over to something else for free or modest price - the market is very competitive.

Problem #2 mcafee - just cause you bought it doesn't mean you need to stick by it. there are free or low costs ones that can be better

If you think the issue is the update, then go back to prior version, for example https://releases.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/60.4.0/win32/en-US/Thunderbird%20Setup%2060.4.0.exe

First delete the Thunderbird directory in c:\program files\ Then install

Thank you for the input, Wayne. We have used Thunderbird for over 20 years and never had a problem. When we go the new windows 10 pc, about 30 days ago, I downloaded thunderbird, copied the profile from the old windows xp onto a flash drive and loaded it into thunderbird on the new pc. Worked perfectly. McAfee was running and all was good. On the 11th, thunderbird lost the ability to receive. What has been good was that I've earned how to put a windows 10 pc into and out of safe mode. Turn off and on a lot of McAfee functions, but sadly not be able to receive email using thunderbird. I about to uninstall thunderbird, then re-install it and use the copy of the profile from the xp pc and see if it will run. Baring that working I will probably uninstall thunderbird forever and just get our emails using the browser. At 74 I think I'm too old to go for a degree in getting thunderbird to receive emails.

more options

Most likely the final posting. I just removed and reinstalled thunderbird. Strange thing when I opened thunderbird the "profile" and everything I thought ha been removed by the uninstall, was still there. So much for a clean uninstall without using something like CC cleaner. Anyway I took the profile from the old XP and pasted it into the thunderbird fold and still can't receive emails Was a wonderful waste of a super beautiful day. Thanks to all who tried to help
