After updating to version 64, Top Sites and Highlights are blank. Also, I cannot add to either category.

Resetting did not help.

This is massively frustrating since someone eliminated the ability to display multi-row bookmarks.

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!

Is Firefox accumulating history normally, the only problem is on the built-in Firefox home (new tab) page?

You mentioned a Reset: was it the Firefox Refresh that restore default settings and removes add-ons? (As described in: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings)

Hi agdr, have you already shut down and restarted Windows since this problem began? That would free file locks and complete any pending updates that could be affecting Firefox.

Next, if history is not working, are you able to add bookmarks? If neither history nor bookmarks works, please check the steps in this article:

Yes, I have shut down and restarted Windows several times. Bookmarks are not working either. I don't have an error message when I start Firefox now. There was an error message days ago but I've been through so much since then that I don't remember what it said.

Unfortunately, it sounds like a problem with the places.sqlite database file. The usual drastic remedy is to move that file away and let Firefox create a new one using your last automatic bookmark backup. The steps are in that article.

I discovered that I'm still having a problem. Top Sites and Highlights work. I can add Bookmarks. However, I find that I can'd delete History or any individual entry in History. I can't delete them in the side bar or in the search window.

Hi agdr, does Firefox accumulate new history? It just sticks around and can't be deleted?

If Firefox isn't accumulating new history, it's possible you are in a private session, i.e., using automatic private browsing. Last time I checked, old history from regular sessions can be viewed in a private session, but is "read only."

I was initially trying to delete a few old items of history. However, after your last post I tried to delete history items that were added tonight but they won't delete either.

I can't remember hearing of this problem before, where history can be accumulated but not deleted.

Are they also un-erasable in the Library window when you are viewing history by day or date range?

  • Ctrl+Shift+h to open the Library
  • In the left column, in the section with the clock icons, choose a day or date range
  • Try deleting an unwanted entry on the right by either:
    • Single-click and tap the Delete key on the keyboard
    • Right-click > Delete Page (be careful not to click Forget About This Site for any site you actually care about)

I can only guess that Firefox has a problem with exclusively locking the database file because some other program is accessing the file. There probably is a tool to investigate that, but it has been a long time since I've used any of those (maybe back on XP) so I don't have any specific recommendations.

Thank you very much for responding. Unfortunately, I've tried all of those suggestions numerous times and none work. In frustration I've even tried deleting all history but that doesn't work either. I'll try restarting with add-ons disabled. I hadn't thought to try that. I did try disabling the Norton app but that didn't help.

Do you have any suggestions as to how I should proceed. Should I re-post the question?

You nailed it! It occurred to me that perhaps the latest version of CCleaner was to blame. I have always retained history so I had CCleaner set to not delete Firefox History. I've used the program in that mode for years and there's never been a problem. So, I ran CCleaner with Internet History checked and it deleted all Firefox History. I wish I had tried uninstalling CCleaner first to see if I could just delete individual items in History. Too late. Also, it just occurred that I should have created an oldplaces.sqlite file. I wanted to let you know of your success so you can add this bit of knowledge to your repertoire.
