Suddenly Thunderbird FREEZES; Cannot access folders/messages/tools, etc Windows 7 Professional
What more is there to say?? I tried installing latest version. Tried ?restoring? earlier version from 12/3/15.

Please Start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7
Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode

Because of "other issues", I did not follow the steps. I DID find on ?Bugzilla? that someone else has had the SAME problem (related to 38.5). I also read SOMEWHERE that ?lightning? might be the problem??? SO... instead... I uninstalled 38.5, reinstalled 38.4, which worked FINE!! Then, I "tried" to get rid of "automatic updating" (DIFFICULT!!). I also ?REMOVED? "lightning" ADD-ON. I, THEN, let it update to 38.5. Things "seem" OK. What a MESS...
