When I switch from X to a text console (VT), Firefox stops working after a few seconds

Scenario: I have a huge webpage which takes a minute or so to load. When I switch to another tty to do something else there, and then return to X after a while, Firefox has still not completed the task. Running "top" on the VT shows near 100 % CPU usage for the Firefox process for a few seconds, but after that, this figure drops to zero.

This seems not to be a problem with X --- I can happily do the same thing with, e.g., QGIS. So far, Firefox seems to be the only exception.

What can I do to prevent Firefox from stopping in this situation?

Regards, T.
