Each item on the menu bar consists of a number of squares with a capital letter A within the square. The drop down menus are OK but it's annoying to have to guess or remember which is which. I have just upgraded the OS to Snow Leopard, and Firefox has upgraded to 28.

Check if this happens in Safe Mode:

Maybe your localstore.rdf is corrupted, unhide the hidden files and folders, go to your profile folder, close Firefox, try rename or delete the localstore.rdf file then restart Firefox.

I must admit the replies were rather too technical for me. I realised after that it was not a Firefox problem, as it applied to other applications also - though variably!. It has now resolved itself, but I don't know if it was through any of my actions. Thanks all the same.
