I have 2 files to redirect visitors to a monthly picture page. http://ils.org.au/prd.htm and http://ils.org.au/prd.html. Both files are identical but the htm file is redirecting to last months picture page instead of this months page. It has worked for months and works fine on another computer with IE8. It also works on this computer with IE8. It appears that the htm file is stuck in cache and isn't reloading. I am using Firefox 6 with Windows XP

Visitors will probably be mostly be first time visitors and would not notice or be affected. But I think it likely you modified that redirect page later and you are using the cached version before specifying no-cache. To avoid such problems on your machine, I would clear the cache at the end of a session, and that is the only thing I would clear.

Tools > Options > Privacy

You can clear your cache immediately (now) with

Tools > Options > Advanced > "Clear Now"

The two source pages look the same as you indicated, copy and paste the following into the location bar. Perhaps the one that is not updating was different a short time ago.

Please mark "Solved" one answer that will best help others with a similar problem -- hope this was it.

When posting links watch out that you don't include an end of sentence period at the end. If a period is going to confuse a link, I leave out the period or use a dash afterwards to incorporate the next sentence or add more words to the sentence.

Thanks a lot for that.

Both files were modified/uploaded within seconds of each other. They worked fine last month and I suspected some problem with FF6.

I did clear the cache, but only for the past hour, not 'now'. I'll try that next month.

The only change made to the files was the redirect url.

I know it is a cache problem because I deleted the .htm file on the server and FF still redirected me to last month's page.

However, this morning, the file worked correctly.

Thanks a lot for your reply.

Peter.

Try to reload web page(s) and bypass the cache as a first to try in cases like this.

  • Press and hold Shift and left-click the Reload button.
  • Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Cmd + Shift + R" (MAC)

Thanks Cor-el.

Yes, I tried Ctrl F5 first thing but no luck, which is strange. I am wondering if there is a bug in FF6 not recognising <META HTTP-EQUIV="CACHE-CONTROL" CONTENT="NO-CACHE">, but won't be able to test it until next month. I'll pay very close attention as to what happens and what steps I take.

It has only happened once so I don't know.

I have just realised I can test it by changing the prd.htm file back to last month and then back to this month.

It worked perfectly both times so I am going to have to assume it was "just one of those things".

Thanks a lot for your help fellows.

Peter.

Firefox caches almost anything by default, so it is always possible that there is old content in the cache.
A reload with bypassing the cache usually helps, but in severe cases using Clear Recent History to clear the cache and possibly cookies and history may be needed (maybe the last hour is sufficient).
