Outlook account loses connection to server after successful initial login to Thunderbird.

ryanzajac

Hi there, I have several email accounts I use Tbird to manage. One of those is a hotmail account. I have the settings setup correctly for IMAP synchronization. But, after the initial pull of messages, the connection to the server seems to fail? For example, I open tbird, it pulls in new messages, run filters, etc... If I come back and try to reply to a message, the outgoing server will timeout (if you test the outgoing server in settings, it connects. If you reply as soon as you open tbird, it will send a message from that outlook account). I believe this issue is more than just the outgoing server. For example, if I move an email to a different folder, it won't register the move until I reopen tbird? Similarly, sometimes if I try to open a message after tbird has been running for a while, the message will not open/fail to load.

These issues seem to be impacting only this outlook account. I'm really not sure where to go with troubleshooting and looking for guidance.

much thanks, Ryan

Lets look at this in bits.,

1. Incoming mail and outgoing mail use entirely different settings, servers and passwords. It is for this reason each account settings has an outgoing servers entry at the end of the list of incoming accounts.

2. Each identity has it's own selected outgoing server. As there is not limit to the number of edintities you can configure to an account you need to check them all. (sorry about that)

3. I have been assuming you are using the traditional IMAP and SMTP to manage your mail. Those with office365 tend to find themselves using the newer exchange protocols and really I know nothing about them except they are "limited" in their scope.

So;

  1. With the traditional SMTP check the entry in the account settings. Check arch entry for each account. Take a special noe of which outgoing server is set as the default (it may wall be an incoming one you deleted 10 years ago from Thunderbird SMTP is separate from incoming.
  2. Open the account setting for this Hotmail account. The initial pane is the identity. At the bottom (you might have to scroll) is the outgoing server for that identity. Is it the one from the outgoing servers (SMT) you thought it was?
  3. Click the manage identities button under the outgoing server details. If there is more than one configured for the account repeat for each. If there is only the one you can cancel out of that dialog.
  4. Click reply.... check specifically in the top of the reply window that the message is From: is correct and click on the drop down arrow beside the from and ensure there is not another instance of the email address listed. That might indicate that the default account is being used, not the identities selected SMTP server.

Please post your results.
