Can't disable extensions permanently (and more!)

Running Firefox 119.0, I've tried now five times to disable all extensions or all but one extension. However as soon as I close Firefox and reopen it, they are all enabled again. I can find no "Save" button on the "Manage your extensions page, so I thought changes were saved automatically. Further, using the Settings button, I reset all extensions to update manually, yet when I close & open Firefox they're all set back to update automatically. Further, websites that I close in one iteration of Firefox are back again when I open it again.

How can I make changes and have them stick?

(The reason I'm trying to do this is because Firefox has suddenly started running glacially slowly and I'm trying to find if an extension is causing the problem.)

Furthermore, I'm submitting this query using Edge. When I try to sign in using Firefox, I get a 500 error. Why?

Thanks!

Open the Add-ons and Themes manager (ctl+shft+a or enter about:addons in the address bar) and click the button next to the 3 horizontal dots to the right of each extension.

That may solve your issue with this site. If it doesn't, post in this thread again.

That's what I've been doing: clicking the blue switch icon to the left of the 3 dots, which then turns grey and adds "(Disabled)" to the extension title.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, when I run in private/troubleshoot mode everything seems fine. Next I open Firefox in normal mode and disable all addons. At that point I have problems again. If I shut down Firefox and reopen it all the previously disabled addons are enabled again (and websites that I've closed are back again). I've scanned for malware with Malwarebytes, which found nothing. So the question is still, how can I disable addons and have the disabling stick?

You can check for problems with the extension registry files in the profile folder.

Try to reset the extensions registry and rename extensions.json (extensionsOLD.json) and rename/remove compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed.

New files will be created when required.

See "corrupt extension files":

You can check for possible updates in case of issues.

  • click the cog icon (left of the Search bar) on the about:addons page to "Check for updates"

You can use the button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page (Root directory).

Thanks Terry, zeroknight, and cor-el for your helpful advice. I decided to uninstall & reinstall Firefox, but in the process of uninstalling I was given the option of resetting(?) Firefox with all extensions removed. I did that, then added the extensions back one at a time. At the end, everything was (and is) working fine. However I could not find to install two extensions that were enabled earlier. I'm guessing that either one of the extensions was previously corrupted, or that one or both of the unavailable (and incompatible?) extensions were causing the problem. At any rate, all seems well now - thanks again.
