This is a recent problem - I have used Thunderbird for 20 to 25 years, but one of the last 2 updates caused this problem
Despite my time with Thunderbird I have over 50 e-mails waiting to be sent. Any significant delay and I will be forced to find a replacement product - really don'e want to do that !!
