I finished using a given webpage and wanted to close it. The webpage's tab was at the end of the tab bar, but I accidentally pushed the 'X' on the top bar. I then attempted to re-open Firebox by pushing the Firebox icon on the taskbar. I did not get anything restored. I had many tabs that I was using for my research. I then remembered that Firefox did not warn me that I was closing an 'x' number of tabs, as it has done in the past.

I then checked my settings and the box for warning the user that s/he is closing so many tabs was not checked. I know I had it checked. Then I remembered that there was a recent update of Firefox, and I had this happen before when there were updates. I did not think of checking this setting with the recent update, because this was not a problem in recent times. Indeed, when I went to settings, the check had been removed by Firefox.

How do I get my tabs back?

Did you try "History -> Recently Closed Tabs/Windows" ?

Backup the session files in the sessionstore-backups folder in the Firefox profile folder to make sure not to lose possible important session data. Do NOT close Firefox when Firefox is already running.

You will normally find these files in the sessionstore-backups folder:

  • previous.jsonlz4 (cleanBackup: copy of sessionstore.jsonlz4 from previous session that was loaded successfully)
  • recovery.jsonlz4 (latest version of sessionstore.jsonlz4 written during runtime)
  • recovery.baklz4 (previous version of sessionstore.jsonlz4 written during runtime)
  • upgrade.jsonlz4-<build_id> (backup created during an upgrade of Firefox)

You can copy a file from the sessionstore-backups folder to the main profile and rename the file to sessionstore.jsonlz4 to replace the current file with Firefox closed.

  • make sure to backup the current sessionstore.jsonlz4

You can try to restore a recent upgrade.jsonlz4-<build_id> when available or use a utility to browse Windows System Restore points to see if you can find a recent sessionstore.jsonlz4 file.

You can look at this tool to inspect a compressed sessionstore file.
